Trying to make this photo better. Lots of background clutter. Cloned it out and treid to get as clean a break as I possibly can. Posted the original photo. Dont really know if it works. Tried blurring the background but no good result. I'm totally amatuerish . What would you guys do? Thanks.

Yes, it works for me. How did you get the painted effect? Thanks

After cloning the background to make it less clutterd,
I used a Paint Shop Pro "edge preserving smooth" @ 30 pixels.

Haven't posted for a while, how about a new background, a tad of glow and a sharpen?

Try a tighter crop and some angle to increase interest

Best I can offer....Adjusted the Hue/saturation in CS2. Applied Unsharp mask. changed the blending mode of the layer...Well a wee bit more than tht but I'm off to bed cos the Mrs is giving me a hard time...Should be doing stuff for college :) If you want the full script. which includes using the pen tool, channels, applying image etc let me know and I'll try to run you thru it.
Cheers
Charley
