View Full Version : Monitor Problems?

Has anyone experienced the problem I?m having with my monitor switching on and off? There seems to be neither rhyme nor reason to when it happens. Some times it just flickers and comes ok again then the next time it won?t show me a screen at all. Resulting in having to shut down with the button on the pc.
All the time it?s blank any work I am doing continues, such as typing etc but I can?t see it until the screen maybe decides to come back again.
As you can imagine it?s a nightmare when it does this after sitting for hours trying to learn ps and working on pics and then doesn?t start again.
Tried testing the graphics card with a program from the cards manufacturor but it seemed fine. Temps on pc seems to be fine.

Noticed tonight that if I blow a cold air fan onto the monitor it seems to stop flashing on and off. But this was maybe only coincidence.

Hi,

How old is the monitor? What type? How connect to your PC?

1 year old tft.connected to graphics card. Wouldnt mind but the labour for the warranty just ran out so have to be sure whats wrong before taking it back under parts warranty.

Hi,

Is it DVI? Possible loose connection/dirt/dust.

The signal is being dropped and as the monitor loses the signal it goes blank. Until you restart the machine and the signal is fed back to the monitor.

Change the connecter, a new screen will have the option of DVI or serial type connector. Whatever is in use - change it first.

Lets hope it is a hardware problem. If software have you changed the settings of screen resolution/3D etc. Update your Direct X:

Update your video drivers and then see how that helps - if at all.

Hi George. Have checked all the connections, not sure of connection type (dvi or other) although it uses an adaptor to convert plug from the monitor to the motherboard.
I don't know of any screen settings being changed, or software changes, but the wife does use the pc sometimes and tends to mess things up alot.
I'm with you on the fact I hope it is hardware related as i know the warranty will cover it, and if software related, could be anything wrong.

Should add that the screen often flickers off on on for ages then sometimes comes ok then sometimes doesn's and needs a reboot. seems that if you leave it off for a while it works better which makes me think its hardware.

The thing I noticed tonight with it working fine once I blew cool air on it might be a fluke, but it started going wrong a minute ago and when i put the fan on again it stopped.

I know nothing at all about computer stuff...but it sounds to me like your monitor is overheating...I know we often have problems with our computers playing up when it gets really hot here....and btw 24 degrees is NOT really hot...so we sometimes place fans so they they blow onto our computers or turn the air con on which seems to stop little problems like flickering monitors etc....but I doubt that it would get hot enough there to cause those sorts of problems...

Could it be dust in the monitor?...see this thread....

It could be something as simple as a dodgy mains lead. Have you tried either replacing the mains lead or plugging in to another socket?

Hi,

It is possibly overheating as Sue says and a good clean of all the areas where dust can gather is a good idea.

Not too good if it is overheating. I presume you do not have an older monitor to try? The biggest problem with PC's is actually tracking down the real culprit/problem.

You should have two connectors at the rear of the monitor and your video card. If the problem persists than change the connector or at least take the connector off and then reset it at both ends of the cable. This should tackle any loose connector problems and do away with any dust from the same. Use a vacuum cleaner to get rid of all dust on the monitor and around your PC. Have you cleaned your PC - internally? It could be your CPU that is overheating - which is more likely. A dodgey fan might be the culpript or a build up of dust within or on top of that fan head.

Try that first.

sounds like a dvi connection mate, try using the standard plug setup if you can, i had a bit bother with my dvi connection so reverted back to the million pin connections, im assuming you graphic card has two sockets, a dvi one and ur normal monitor type.

Sounds like a faulty wiring, have you tried it on a different pc?
