being an ex IT manager, I've seen more Hard drives crash than I care to remember, So I am probably paranoid about data back up !!!! Presently I back up all my weddings onto 2 seperate HD's (3 terabytes of storage capacity in all) & a DVD copy whilst I work on them. I keep the HD copy on my PC for about a year (in case of orders) then delete them, just leaving a back up on DVD. How does everybody else deal with data storage ?

Okay I have to ask.... whats a Terabyte?

And after I do a wedding or a shoot I back the raw files up onto an external HD (as well as my PC for post processing)... and I burn them onto a disc just in case... I then do the same with the edited images once they are done. I do know that some togs store a dvd or cd of their wedding images at another place also just in case there is a fire or a robbery etc.. thats probably very smart and something I should think about doing also...

Yup I get home and download them to the PC.

A quick edit out of the trash, and a DVD copy is made of the RAW files, which then lives with the client's folder.

A second copy of all the RAW files is then made to an external HD.

Then, the CF cards can go back into the bag but won't be reformatted until the day before the next job!

Working on the PC, from the RAW files on the PC's drive, the files are converted and saved out into the 'Works in Progress' folder on the PC, and the client folder on the external HD.

Once the RAW files on the PC are finished with, they replace the originals on the external HD, and are then deleted from the PC.

So, I finish up with:
1 DVD of original, unworked RAW files on DVD
1 set of worked RAW files on the external HD
2 sets of jpegs, ready to print bar sharpening, (one - external HD, 1 PC Hard Drive)

THEN: a DVD with the RAW & the jPegs gets burnt and sent to my parent's loft.

The 'Works in Progress' folder on the PC keeps the 'live' jobs jpegs in, ready for uploading to lab etc etc. Once the job is closed, that folder gets deleted, usuall three or four months after the job. (If I get stragglers ordering, I can retrieve them from the externalDH)

So that's how I do it!

my backup,,,,

all images stay on cf card and cards filed away, then i create 9 dvds of raw images and place them around the house in case of fire, 3 of which go to parents in aberdeen, edinburgh and one to lerwick. I then copy the raw files onto 4 hard drives, and 2 externals, the externals are placed in a fireproof box at bottom of the garden buried under 3 foot concrete slab, with a 9 digit combination, i then convert to jpeg and make 9 dvd backups of the jpegs again sent to parents, but this time i send a copy to hong kong to my uncle whom stores them safe in case europe goto war and i lose my parents set.
Then final images, this is 15 dvds all sent to friends and family for storage world wide, with 2 kept in my cellar in a 5 inch bomb proof safe wiht a 256bit encryption security system.

I get told this is overkill but best to be safe than sorry.

Hmmm I'm a bit slack....

I download them... Usually format the CF card as I use
it the next day...

If I remember I put them on a few CDs.. Shot JPG
so they fit... Sometimes..

Edit them and send them to the brides...

hmmmm, thanks for the replies guys, I don't feel so paranoid now LOL.

And Barry & George sound like the kind of IT users with a sense of humour, that we used to identify for 'special measures'. After a good verbal slapping around in the IT basement, we would go through their e-mails & web surfing tracks for evidence against them :diablo: :exit:

Aww, don't worry Dave. There's plenty of room in my Mum's loft - she won't mind, and she's only in Altrincham, so you won't have to throw your discs anywhere near as far as me!

Ahhhh, but you would strike the match before throwing it into the White House wouldn't you?

Yeah - my back-up regime is similar to others mentioned.

RAW files from CF cards to PC HD AND put CF cards in car boot (in case of fire/theft)
Copy RAW files to 2 NAS discs (in case of disc fail)
Copy RAW files to DVDs (usually 3-4 discs per wedding)
Take DVD to Mother in law's wardrobe (in case of fire)

After each day's edit - backup "Work in progress to NAS x2"

After final edit - burn client DVDs of images and duplicate copy to go to Mother in laws. Copy final set to both NAS discs.

Keep images on NAS until 12 months in case of reorders

Sleep well

Cheers

I copy all to PC and replicate to external Hard disk and also onto my 2Tb Raid 5 NAS box sitting in my loft.
Files are (well mostly) also backed up on DVD.

After also working 15 years in IT i have backups of my backups lol...

Storing the backup copies in a loft sounds like a very bad idea to me, unless the loft is insulated in such a way as to prevent wide temperature fluctuations. The huge temperature variations in many lofts would potentially destroy CD/DVD in quite a short time. Constant expansion/contraction doesn't sound like a good idea for the coatings.

The DVD's arn't stored in the loft, the 2Tb NAS box is. The loft is also fully floored out with lights and elec etc. It's almost a full on room on it's own. It's a pretty clean and cool dust free environment, perfect for a NAS.
