View Full Version : ADSL dropping connection problem

My ADSL link keeps being dropped and I am not sure if it's me, something I've done, BT or ISP.
I have Demon ADSL through a Belkin Wireless MIMO router. The wireless side of things is (I think) fine. My ADSL connection drops 3-6 times a day - usually mid-upload (!) but I seem to see a pattern of dropped connections when we receive an incoming phonecall.
The router tells me I have a dropped connection - but the only way I can seem to get it to re-connect is to restart the router (and if that doesn't work - to pull the power out of the router and count to 15 before replugging it.
I have the latest firmware on the router (according to the Belkin site).
Any idea what else might be causing the dropped connections ...it's a real PITA - especially when I leave print uploads to run overnight and the damn connection drops after 4 images (gggggggrrrrrrrrrrr)
Advice welcome before I boot it to Demon/BT etc
Cheers

Sounds like exactly the same problems we have been having recently Mark. Also have a Belkin (which I am not impressed with) and also noticed it was worse when using the phone. Reseting the Belkin usually restored the connection, as it seems to for you. We had recently connected a new cordless phone to the same microfilter as the modem, but disconnected that and put an old handset in its place at the weekend and it seems to be ok now.
Have you connected any new devices to any phone extensions in the house recently? Could be worth removing things one at a time to see if it makes a difference. My ISP tech support also suggested replacing the microfilters, but I haven't done that as removing the new phone seems to have done the trick.
Hope you sort it soon - I know how annoying it is!

Yup, sounds like it's either the filter, or something you have on a socket somewhere interfering with it.

One thing to beware of is using a mobile phone close to the router - I'm sure you've heard the noise on a radio when using a mobile close by, imagine what that does to the signal to noise ratio through the router!!

Thanks everyone ... lots of useful advice. I shall have a play with the filters on the various sockets in use.
We have a cordless phone running very close to the router - so that might be a problem.
My old Belkin worked fine and I don't have trouble with the wireless side of things just the dropping of ADSL. Wireless connectivity seems pretty stable - dropped out twice in 6 months.
My old Belkin was rock solid - this new one is the PITA.
Thanks again all

ps - it may well be a netgear next time :Dm

Now isn't that typical.
I report the ADSL problem to my ISP - they run a "test" on the line and find I "have a problem with my hardware" ...
and since then the line has been as solid as a .errr.. solid thing
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Better not enquire too much in case they undo it!

If it happens again i suggest logging i nto your router (belkin ip is usually 192.168.0.1) username admin password admin, Once you have done this go onto logs and it will display where the router is failing.. such as pppoe authentication error ect from this you will be able to google the error for a possible fix!

Thanks for the suggestion - my router does not appear to have a "logs" section. It has a "security log" - but that doesn't mention general router type stuff (not what I would have expected anyhow)
Am I looking in the right place?
I've logged in, authenticated and gone through every menu option ...nowt!

fingers crossed - it's all sorted ..looks like it might have been a duff micro-filter - I just swapped it for another one elsewhere in the house and it has been as solid as a solid-thing (to paraphase Ashford and Simpson)
cheers
