I am starting to get a little confused when Barry says the maximum size file for a pic is 146kb, in which format is that? Because all the time that I have been on the forum the size for a jpeg was 192kb with a max length of 800 pixels and rescently when you go to the pic manager it now says 195kb and I have been doing up to that since the change and if I go over it gets rejected.

Can someone please clear this up?

i only used 145kb cos thats all i get away with before it tells me via image management that its too big. I didnt realise 195 was a limit.

Barry, if you actually look at what it says on the manager jpegs are up to 195.3kb and 1000x1000 pixels and jpg's are 195.3kb with no pixel restriction. So it's changed again. Oh by the way I don't know if it happens to anyone else but if I open the manager and then close it without using it it then keeps coming back up again and won't go away without going to another site or closing explorer!

I'm not 100% sure how it works... actually I'm not 100% sure how anything works...

but I find that while the file limit is actually 195kbs (this is for jpegs) it seems to work better for me if I keep them below 160kbs... if I go over that it will often reject them and I'm too lazy to keep on trying so I just keep em under 160kbs and its all good.. its also uses less bandwidth and we all know that this forum costs a fortune to run in bandwidth and every little bit helps.. :)

So how come I can load panos at 1200 pixels and about 100kb as jpegs and it's quiet happy with them?
Why the difference between Jpeg and jpg, I've always understood them to be the same thing (ISTBC) with the difference being confined to the file extension requirements of dos and pre-windows9 platforms.

mmm yeah id be keen to know that too, i know if i use the file attachment, create my pic at 800px longest side, and filesize is above 145kb, it then tells me cannot upload, please sort filesize blah blah.

I wonder then if its just martin trying to keep sizes down etc for forum server and storage, no idea.

I do know the 800px is just to stop the whole page becoming a scroll bar left and right, to view all images, which then throws out the rest of that particular thread.
