View Full Version : Competition 5 --- Studio Leaf

OK chaps and chapesses, it’s time for Mods Competition Number 5. This comp is a little more specific than those gone by and is dedicated to Autumn (which it is in the UK – but those in different seasons can play just the same). Firstly, the subject must be a single leaf; Secondly, it must be a studio shot – meaning, here, that it must be artificial light. The light might be flash, candle, torch, bonfire, lamp etc etc….

Also, we would ask you to describe – briefly - how you set up your shot; innovation might add to the Mod’s appeal. However, as usual, other comments are discouraged.

Usual competition rules apply…only one entry and photographs must be shot specifically for the competition. The standard and quantity has risen notably over successive comps and we hope this will continue.

To get you in the mood, I’ve had a go this evening. I taped a sheet of A3 paper to the wall, on which I placed a leaf. Camera on a tripod – ISO 100 the rest of the info is in the photo. I then illuminated the leaf with a handheld LED torch.

Now it’s your turn - make me look bad :-)

PS The competition will close at the end of Friday 31 October 2007 (UTC-12 so no whinging:-))

Hi Chris,

this may take a little time for members to set up given the specifics involved.

Will try to get involved if time allows.

I'm a little confused. I assume only Mods can enter this? if so why have a comp for mods only? How many Mods are there?

No no no....

mods are the only ones who cannot enter this competition..

the mods hold a vote to select the winner .. thats why its called the moderators challenge... :)

Lol... no its our fault... or should I say Chris's.. cause its never really my fault...

We should make sure that the rules (and the prize) are stated at the beginning of each challenge.... we tend to forget that not everyone knows how it works...

Sleep well and happy togging... :)

Been kind of busy but I wanted to put this up. I shot the leaf on poster board then added the puddles of color in Photoshop. I don't like how they look after I posted it. They look so much better on my screen. I'll see what happen and maybe repost the photo.

i just spent a pleasurable hour setting fire to leaves . . . . . no decent shots, but it appealed to my pyromaniac tendencies . . . ah well, back to the drawing board. . . .

LOL, I was doing the same, A piece of cotton a box of matches and a few leafs, but no all mine looked poopyu also... back to the drawing board:warning2:

Hi,

Must admit I did not think of setting fire to it!!! Maybe i will after I post it though.

Shot within a light tent, black background, one light above and one side on (studio flash). Leaf was dropped and shot taken as it passed the lens. I have not added any blur. The image has had some saturation, cloned a bit of green from the edge of the leaf, burnt in the background to black and sharpened.

All shot with my nice new camera - pity you cannot view the files in anything but CS3 though!!!!! Shot a fair number of pictures and leafs - good to try out something new.

This challenge is certainly getting everyone thinking out
of the box.....

Very interesting ones so far... A lot of thought put in them...

If not that, at least they've not burned down the house yet.... yet...

Hi Sue,

Got the Canon EOS 40D - waiting until the sort out the AF problems, which appear to be hardware, and will then buy the 1D Mark lll. Same problem with the 1Ds Mark lll - lot of money for something that will not focus properly.:ops:

I hope this qualifies. It is a multiple exposure of a single leaf. Each time it was exposed I turned it 120 degrees and held a fluourescent torch over the leaf to spotlight it.
f16 at 1.5sec.

Here's my effort! I had no idea how to make a leaf interesting! so, I used a varigated Ivy leaf to get different colours and used some Oak bark as a background to get some texture. The built in flash provided the lighting.

Eventually decided on this idea being my favourite type of shot for the comp.
One shot/long shutter, taken while moving zoom to give multiple exposures effect (you'll see the different sized images of same shot throughout the pic.)
No pp except crop/resize for posting. Two torches as lights, top and side.
