During the morning I spent half an hour in the back garden with my macro lens and took some amazing photos of insects, cobwebs and flowers. This afternoon, I was with the in-laws and took some breath-taking photos of my son and his cousin.

So how come, once I've imported them into photoshop they look like they've been taken on a disposable camera! It must be that my camera is broken! I can't bear the thought that I've just taken awful photos today :sulk:

I'm guessing you know why the pictures are naff!! -- i.e. did you hand-hold the macros??? did you set the focus to manual and forget to change it back for the inlaws??? or are you telling us that your camera really has bitten the dust????

Ahhh... welcome to my world... it happens all the time.. we view the shot on the little preview screen and get all excited... then we gets home and loads it in only to be disapointed... think on the bright side though at least with digital your not paying for film and you get to practice for free! :)

Thanks Bindii, :thanks: I hadn't though of calling yesterday's results as practice pictures - Makes me feel better for the dodgy photos.

It's as you said - The photos weren't out of focus or anything like that, it's just that they didn't seem to capture what I saw through the view finder.

have you possibly accidently set your camera to a lower image quality mode also?

That was my first thought also. I once spent a wonderful afternoon photographing waterfowl only to end up with pictures only fit to e-mail due to setting the camera to that size file for the previous shoot and forgetting to reset the file size to max.

Oh well.

Okay... seeing as these are now practice shots you might as well learn something from them... can I give you a small hint as to something that you may have done wrong when taking them?...

oh too bad if you don't wanna know cause I'm telling you anyways...

its the light... you didnt look at the light before you took the shots?... cause most of them have been taken in bright sunlight... (including the indoors one cause the sun is totally blowing out the window there)... next time try taking shots either in the early morning or late afternoon light when its not as harsh.. or if you have to shoot outside when its bright like that shot in the shade (and I don't mean speckled shade either..look for an even cover of shade)...

and maybe try some different angles when you shoot stuff.. if there is a plant on the ground and you want a photo of it... try getting right down to its level...

I hope this helps ... :)

Thanks again Bindii **Bindii Rules**- I was so concerned with getting enough light on the macro shots, what with the small aperture, I didn't stop to think I may be getting too much direct light! (Mind you, with British summer we had, I don't what that yellow thing is in the sky)
