We are a new event and wedding photography company. I would be interested if anyone has any advice for getting noticed on search engines. There seems to be so many people offering SEO services it is difficult to know what is good and what is bad - any general articles that anyone can use?

First of all, I think there's not enough content in your site. I mean, you offer wedding services but there's only a few wedding pics in there. Also, in the photo section, when I clicked on any images, a tiny window opened and all I could see was a small part of the pic. The window wasn't expandable either. U might want to fix that! ;)c. As for your question, I'm not an expert, but if you want to be highly ranked, you will need LOTS of outside links. I believe that's how the main search engines do rate sites now. But I might be wrong. As I said, not an expert in that field. But I do know that "content" is a VERY important part of a website and if that your website doesn't have enough of it, people won't come back and it surely won't help your ranking with search engines either. Hope this will help a 'lil. :)

Thanks for the feedback - I will look at the image problem and try to fix it quickly. In terms of number of wedding images, it's a little difficult when we have only just started - but I will post more images as soon as we produce them.

In terms of search engine optimisers - are there any services out there or consultants that people have used successfully?

Most search engines come and look for you nowadays but I still use a couple of submission wizards around once a month.

I get loads of phone calls from people telling me they can guarantee me a top 10 listing in google if I pay them money. Do not get sucked in - if they offer everybody a top 10 place and 15 pay - how can I be in the top 10 !!!! Its a con.

You need to get the best keywords for your site. A google search for keywords will give you an idea on what to do.

Links are important - reciprocal links are the best these are both way links from you to them and from them to you.

As far as I'm concerned the INTERNET is pretty much knackered for people to search realistically. I use my site mainly for a gallery for people to look through once they have typed in my web address. They get my web Addy from all my literature. Your web Addy should be on everything from your booking forms to the back of your car on a decal (if you want to).

You could pay to go on such databases as Confetti etc. but I have no experience with this.

Make sure you have some method of tracking your visitors so you can monitor your progress.

Finally tell everybody you can. Tell the newspapers tell everybody. Its like a leak in a dam for ages its just a trickle and then momentum grows and it gets busier and busier.
