After discussions about what members wanted, and a fair shout for a section for new members and basic photography information and help, here it is.

Please post Tutorials, Help, Guidance that you find scouring the internet, i.e basic information such as Apertures, Shutterspeeds, Rules, Camera help etc etc.

Members who have just started out in photography and still perhaps learning their cameras, and all the techno jargon that comes with it, please please feel you can post here and a more experienced member can guide you in the right direction.

DO NOT FEEL A QUESTION IS STUPID,,,,,THE ONLY STUPID QUESTION IS ONE THAT IS NOT ASKED.

Well I'll go first with the rule of thirds.

Composition of an image is generally accepted to look better to the human eye if the main focal points or lines are on the lines whic divide an image into thirds.

To make sure you try to keep with this, imagine a noughts and crosses board (tic tac toe for the yanks) on the screen. Put the horizon in a landscape on oneof the lines going horizontally. Centre a person in a portrait on one of the vertical lines. Generally this will improve the image for the human eye to feel at ease with it's layout.

Oh and try to have people looking across the frame not straight into camera when using thirds for positioning.

Please help!

This statement isn't strictly true. I have a wee bit of an idea re. photography but no gear! I am looking at buying the Canon 450d as it is making me drool gadget-wise but photography-wise I have a feeling that its like a little old lady buying a Ferrari.

I have also never posted on a forum before so I have probably committed some terrible web-faux pas, so apologies if so! It said beginners so I went for it!

Go on feel the power and joy of the transaction! - buy the kit, spending someone elses money! Or if you are an amazing photography swengalli - Take me under your wing and show me the way!

Hi
The rule of thirds is coming to me BUT, even with a grid on screen, my excitement at finding the 'perfect' shot overcomes my ability to place the items in the right box!

Somewhere Ive picked up that
a The hoirizontal picture should be divided into 3 eg sand, sea sky and in equal proportions. Is that really corect

b There is a rule of thirds involving diagonal lines. I'm sure there is a tutorial on this site somewhere illustrating this.

This might sound a little silly.

I'm terrible with manuals, and as much as I look, I cant find how to change the shutter speed on my Olympus E-410. The presets sometimes aren't the right thing, you know? So if there is a way to change it manually, please tell me!!

Thanks ever so..

This might help bekfa. It is a link for the manual (Olympus Evolt E 410) and setting shutter speed is on page 32.
