As George has closed the RG thread that got hi-jacked (nuff said) and also went somewhat off topic regarding this forum I'll start a new thread in the right place and let the debate continue.
PS George I'm not a lad like that so I'll not take your offer re theXXXkissXXX any way our beards may get entangled.:dizzy:

Nice one Tony... cheers..

My thoughts.....

The forum should be a friendly place, but also a place for learning...

Posters should give thought to their posts, try to "encourage" than blame or crit...

If you feel you want to "chat" about something not relating to photography,
create a new thread for it in the NON Photo Section...

I'll speak to Martin when he returns about perhaps making the difference
between Photo and non-photo a little more obvious....

Getting the tone of a forum right is incredibly difficult to do - there's a very fine line between over-friendly clique and too anonymous seriousness. I think the odd friendly posts actually help make the place seem friendly and welcoming. Makes people see that they're pictures aren't necessarily going to be slated, nor ignored as they're not "one of the croud".

I think a forum that's too big can easily get too anonymous, and without people being friendly to each other, it makes it less inviting.

So, my point, I think it's about right at the moment, and the new "more detailed" crits are great. Being a complete novice (not calling myself amateur yet!) I don't see it as intimidating, even though there are lots of pro's around. I've been trying to think whether it would help to be able to "classify" yourself - novice, beginner, amateur, experienced amateur, pro, experienced pro?
I don't know if this would be a help or a hinderence....

Thoughts?

How about 'photographer'????:grin: that's what I am and have been for the past 55 years or so. All the other pigeon holes are meaningless. :wave3:

'experienced pro' you've noticed then there are some who ain't :grin::grin: {not on this forum of course}

Yep, the tags are largely useless as it reflects more what you think of yourself rather than your actual level.

Whilst I take photographs professionally, I am still a novice when compared to, say, Tony with with 55 years behind a camera.

I once belonged to a national photo society who's 'Beginner's Portfolio' comp a year or so ago was won by someone with 30 years experience!

Their definition of a Beginner was someone who hadn't won a nationaly recognised competition before - regardless of the fact that this woman had been published countless times!

Far better, I think, to let people critique an image without any preconceived ideas about the person who took it.

It's interesting the range or people who post here,
so getting a crit from each is actually a good view
point from public over all, if you were going to sell
or make your photos available to the public, a larger
view point does make sense....

Even Pros miss the obvious sometimes...

Those who post their pic here to be crit have to
be opened minded about their work and not over protective..

Different people like different things, but we all know
a good one if we see it... We've just got different views
on what's a good one... :)

I have to agree with George (god I hate doing that it goes against the grain) every one see's things differently, and the fact that you can say what you feel is good, it would be a boring world if we all thought alike.

I have been away for a few days and it seems I have missed quite a bit !!!

With regards to this forum can i say that I think the balance is about right, plenty of fun/gossip/skits etc and yet, you have the opportunity to post in the crit section or get serious in the other sections too. It is as a lot of camera clubs would like to be but unforunately the evenings speaker sometimes gets in the way !!!!

As a newcomer myself in here i would hate to see this forum become too elitist as has happened with some others I am on ( but seldom post !) so that you are watching what you say incase someone leaps on you. The fluffy element is great and serves a purpose too, in making it less formal and more welcoming; thereby making newcomers and less experienced photographers willing to post images and advance their knowledge/experience.

I hope that the "wrong" type of person dont wander in here and disrupt things, but i can see that with George and the DB's; ( Aussie term i think Bindii maybe able to explain !!) bindii and dotty then they should be kept in check.

If it aint leaking then you dont apply a bung and at the moment it looks watertight to me. Rock on:icon_nice

Hmmmmmm....

But also.... We need to keep in mind the following...

Each Thread has a "theme" and we SHOULD try and stick
to it the best we can, odd comments yes, not a problem,
but when threads disappear into the dark folds of mindless
giggling, then we need to stop and take stock of ourselves..

I know that Martin and I would prefer to keep that a personal
things for all of you, and not have to moderate or keep
reminding you to keep on track...

I know I'm the worst for silly comments, but I do try and
keep them measured and to the point of the thread...

I hence forth will check myself... :)

Want to go off on a right angle? Start a new thread
in the NON-PHOTO section... :)

Ok I'm back - 5 Days away and I miss all the good stuff.

I have been kept up to date with what happened earlier this week and I think it has been for the good.

It has made us refocus on the idea of the forum and make sure that peoples questions don't get hijacked by our friendly banter.

I agree there is a Non Photography section. There is also a chat room where all the chit chat can happen. The forum wouldn't be the same without the friendly and cheeky posts that happen but when somebody wants a serious critique of their images its a shame they sometimes are left with "Nice".

I am guilty myself that I don't often realize which section I am in and just post Willy nilly. If somebody wants a serious critique of their image then it should be given. if they just want to show us a picture then it has its own place to be posted.

Anyway nice to be back I see there were 22 new members whilst I was away - did somebody say I was gone or something !!!

Hey Martin...nice to have you back..and I'm not against some of the proposed changes in the forum....just as long as it doesn't end up like all the other sterile forums out there....that would be a loss for all of us....

Oh....I peeved plenty of people off while you were gone....I hope your proud of me! ;)c

I agree. the informality and mentalness of most people on this forum makes it.. Just a thought, howsabout a black & white section? With digital I think lots of people are veering away from it..

The difficult thing is Tim, if you got a picture of a dog...

If it's black and white, do you put it in the mono section,
or the wildlife section???

Mono covers loads of stuff... It may get quite lost in everything, and the more sections Martin has the more confusing it might get...

But then again.. I see your point... A few photographers shot in mono only sometimes and mono has got a huge following esp in journalism...

Hmmmm Catch 22...

I would think that the LOW LIGHT Section could become LOW LIGHT/MONO as there seems to be few posts in that section....... if a post is made as a mono image then I would view it in that aspect first ie as a mono print, the image itself would be secondary; so animals weddings table top etc would all be valid...... IF the author put the image into MONO then I would see that as its main/strongest feature and therefore it is seeking comments as a mono posting.

With regard to the number of topics available.... I think that the balance is about right.... when i first started posting I did find it a little bewildering but now i am used to which areas i view first its no problem > the last post column and the new posts option are invaluable.
