I'd appreciate any suggestions on the best way to resize for the web whilst retaining the highest possible image quality. Original will be up to 4368 x 2912, approx 12.5mb RAW and has to end up no more than 800 on the long edge and 200kb or smaller JPG.
The last time I did it I tried resizing to 800 in one go, but the image quality was appalling. Tried again, reducing by about 20% each time and results were better but not great. Using CS2 if that helps.

800 pixels on the longest lenght. 72 DPI (Dots Per Inch) then save as jpeg at about 6 or 7 Quality (Around 100 to 150K)

I think your problem is with your DPI make sure its at 72.
