I'm in the market for a 50mm lens George. Any idea how much it will be? It needs to be cheaper than the canon one of the same spec to make it worth it.

Hi Bandit,

No price yet but it will work with full frame as well as cropped and the price has got to be better than Cannon. :russian_r

As I understand it the 50mm 1.8 is awsome for the money, but I doubt it's durability?

The Canon 1.4 has reliability issues and needs to be handled with care too.

The 1.2 is waaaaay to expensive for me.

Could a Sigma be the answer?? I wonder?

well spotted. as you well know geo i have the 30mm 1.4.
I hope they decide to bring an 85mm 1.4 sigma now to compliment the 30mm and now the 50mm. I'd be tempted to go for that.

The 30 is no good for full frame though...shame

Being an EX Sigma it should have nearly if not as good a build quality as an OEM lens and the optical quality will also be great. Whether it will stand comparison with a OEM f1.8 is an other matter, all f1.4's suffer from being soft until you get down to about f4, the Zeiss Plannar being the exception; if that had been AF I'd have got one, when I had one on loan it blew both Nikon and Canon f1.8's out of the water but I, nor my Canon toting mate, could now live without AF for our street togging.

Excuse me for joining in here, but I note that Bandit wrote above that Canon 50mm 1.8 were doubtful for their durability. Could someone explain why, please? (I have just bought a 2nd hand one ... albeit from a reputable shop)

the 50mm 1.8 is very light, build isnt fantastic but ive had no issue with it at all whatsoever in 3 years of usage, and my camera has taken some funny bounces, the only issue with it is that it can hunt for focus slightly, but i use manual focus mainly so not an issue.

I totally 10000 percent recommend the 50mm 1.8 if ur carefull with your gear it will do u total justice.

Hi,

It depends on which one you have puchased. The newer model - the mark ll - is plastic so does not have the same durability as the mark l which was metal.

These lenses are fine but not designed for heavy duty work or extended durability. Very lightweight - more use of plastics.

It is still a good lens.

I thought that was a bit cheap. Where did you find the £190 price?

£151 inc postage from HK on e-bay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Sigma-50mm-F2-8-EX-DG-MACRO-Canon-Nikon_W0QQitemZ250230939844QQihZ015QQcategoryZ3007 0QQtcZphotoQQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It's an EX lens so build quality will be very good, probably better than the plastic Canon.

There is also a 50mm macro for £60 at the moment but it's a Nikon mount.

I'd want to see test results from the f1.4, they are usually far too soft at full aperture, except the very expensive Zeiss one.
But if you check e-bay you'll find this.....

I know some 1.4's can be a little soft but having checkout out many examples shot with most 50mm 1.4 on flickr I'm happy with the the results. It's how you use em that makes the shot, pure out and out sharpness is not the point.

The link for the lens on WExpress is a great lens, I used one on my Fuji, but as I now shoot with canon bodies they are no use to me. Cheers
