Hi,

PC world tends to have a lot of printers set up with examples of ouput from each. Just check the cost of refills and number of tanks.

For the sub-£100 budget you have, I can recommend the Epson Stylus D120.

I run this alongside my Stylus Pro 3800, and use it for all standard text or anything which requires high-speed output. It will print to a maximum size of A4 and produces very good quality photographs for the money.

It runs two black ink cartridges and three coloured ones, replacement cost per tank around £6.99 each. I think it is currently selling at around £70, it is also very neat and tidy looking with no clutter of buttons etc to collect dust.

Worth checking out in my opinion.

has anyone tried the Canon PIXMA iP4500? i've read a couple of good reviews about it and the resolution is really good.

I used Canon printers for a long time, I am after all (as my name suggests) an avid Canon fan.

Like everything else from the Canon stable, their printers are excellent. I don't have any personal experience of the model you mention, but I now favour Epson over Canon in the printer market. Epson are very much specialised in the printer market, whereas I think that Canon are best at making cameras and lenses.

The Canon printer will however be good without doubt.

I had an Epson photo printer about 3 yrs back. I found it unreliable and really fell out with it.
I have a Canon Pixma 4500 now as i only want low cost A4 home prints. (anything of any worth will be sent out).
I can definately report that this printer is worth every one of the 63 pounds i paid for it via Amazon. Right upto A4 the prints are sharp, superb colour reproduction, absolutely no banding and quicker than the instructions claimed too.
It takes two black cartridges and three colour. Ok, they are quite expensive, but they can be got a lot cheaper by sourcing from the web, and they are also at least twice the capacity of most other cartridges too so are probably quite cost effective in the long run.
Its very neat as it has a bottom feed tray to hold a4 sheets and a closable top feed for heavier paper (no open back for dust to settle within the paper feed mechanism.
So far, V. Happy with it:ok:

I personally use an Epson R1800 and its fantastic - best printer i've ever worked with (and i've used a lot!)

I use to be pro HP for printers until they wound me up over paper types. Wouldn't give me support over a paper roller problem as I wasn't using HP paper lol. The nerve!

As for canon, I know a number of people who have turned away from Canon printers. They had this strange thing they put in on certain models that caused the printheads to break so that the printer had to go for servicing.

Some of them also do that via software. After so many prints they tell you to send the printer away and you need a software hack to stop it. We had that at my last job but I can't remember what canon model it was.

I do hope for your sake that the "Canon Mafia" aren't reading this. These are highly slanderous comments you are making about one of the worlds most powerful electronics concerns! Not liking or favouring a certain product is one thing, to make such accusations of "foul play" is something you need very deep pockets to be able to defend. Worrying about copyright and a few cribbed images would somewhat fall into insignificance should the "powers that be" wish to take you to task over this !! I'd be more selective with my words if I were you !!

Funny we've had several Canon printers here at work over the last 20 years, producing are fair number of prints and I don't recall that problem ever occuring.
Must be lucky I guess.

My words of warning about the "slanderous" comments you made about Canon printers, was a genuine piece of advice on taking care over what (and how) we say something. I'm sure that if you look again at what (and how) you made comment about the printers, you would agree that it was a little strong!?

I have also read a lot of the other threads you have been involved in, and can see that there is a lot of support given to you. I for one have given that support, and attempted very early on to prevent you getting drawn into a bun fight.

Lets get back onto the subject of our shared passion, "photography" !?
