Hay all!

I am starting up with photography after a long time without a decent camera. I need to buy one now. I have a bit of a clue about shooting / composition but less skilled with the techi bits.

What would you buy? Sky's the limit budget and then work back to mere mortal costs! I am thinking about the Canon 450d - What do ya reckon?

Cheers!

Nikon D300, then D200, D80. Or canon equivalent. Pentax and Olympus are good too however I personaly would stay away from the entry level with all makes. Don't get me wrong, the entry level cams are good but I wouldn't want you to make the same mistake I did. I went out and bought a brand new shiny D40x and it was great....for about a day. I then started to find it quite limiting because of very few (three to be precise) AF points, manual focus on non afs lenses (which 50% of mine are) and a host of other little niggles that made me wish I had waited and got a better model. Picture quality however is cracking. As it is, I've had it for about three or four months and Im now buying a D200 next week. If you have done much in the line of photography before I would suggest going for at least the second or third model up (at least with nikon. I can't coment on the others because I haven't used them-apart from an Olly, which I quite liked), that way, you won't need to upgrade for a while. Think of it as an investment. :)

Canon or Nikon - these are the biggest and the best and if your hobby becomes an addiction or a profession you will be able to grow into the range of bodies, lenses and flashguns.

The Canon 450D is a good camera. Capable of handling everything for the hobby tog. Most places have 'cash back' deals on Canon products up until 30 June I think so certainly worth considering.

Or a secondhand Canon 400D - I just sold one for £275 and an absolute bargain for someone starting out. There are still some new 400D's around which can be picked up for £300 including cashback.

I find on lots of boards people saying to go for canon or nikon as these have the biggest range of lenses, however Sony also have a wide range of high quality lenses and my minolta lenses are great, sigma also do sony fit. I haven't yet looked for a lens for sony or my minolta and found it unavailable!

I use sony so am biased ..... looking forward to seeing the 24mp camera when it comes out later this year!.

PS I did use a canon 5d the other week was very impressed with the sharpness!

Hi Renee,

I thought I must be in a minority of one with the 1D Mk lll - nice to know there is someone else out there. Great camera, and so, so, fast.

Hey George, NIce to be back on! I have been crazy busy with trying to do some marketing stuff. On top of that going on vacation with family. Now it will be wedding season and I am going to be swamp with that.
On the camera, I got a great deal. I was using a Mark II N and was having so many issues with it. Repair after repair, 3 weddigns and it would not work, turn on, snap a picture. I sent it out for repair and the focusing screen and screws needed replacing....go figure. Well long story, I had that camera for a year with Lots of trips to repair shop. I ran into a very nice man that owns a camera store talked to him about my problem with canon. He hooked me up with a canon rep. gave him all my repair history. He told me he would give me a canon 1d mark III and I pay $1000.00 and give them my old 1 year old mark N...... Had to jump on that and run with it. Great deal for me! I am sooooo happy with the 1dmark III what a great camera, and I just love the self cleaning. I so wished my 5d had that.

Have a look at the Samsung GX10,roughy the same as the pentax k10d,in a lot of comparisons it competes with cameras way above its price range plus you have 30 years of lenses to go at,most pentax lenses will fit it,it is also showerproof as all the doors and such are sealed, normally only seen on £1000 plus cameras, just maybe worth looking at other cameara manufacturers instead of the main two, hope this helps
