hello, im new to this forum and looking for a little advise please.

I have been mildly interested in photography for years, i used to go with my dad to photograph steam trains when i was a kid, but in the last six months have been getting into it more seriously.

i have a nikon coolpix 3200 (i think that is the number - could be wrong its not in front of me) which is about 3-4 years old i think. i have experimented with all the manual settings and using photo editing software but the compact is starting to limit me now.

my subjects are landscapes, sky-scapes (i have a thing for sun/cloud patterns), animals and birds. my little 3.0 MP is ok but for the wide angle landcapes its not getting as much detail as i would like, and far too much noise, and for the birds/animals (especially when in motion) its not got the zoom level/shutter speed controls i need.

therefore i would like to upgrade, and have been looking at DSLR's. After much perusing the internet I am considering the Nikon D60 + AF-S DX Nikkor VR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G Lens package from jessops, or perhaps the slightly cheaper D40x. I like my coolpix despite its limitations so thats why im looking at Nikon again.

My question is, for a novice in my situation, is this a suitable model to initiate me into the world of DSLR's?

D40X works for me (my first DSLR), and they are coming down in price due to the D60 release.

Hi, about 3 weeks ago I had just upgraded to my first DSLR. I went for the exact package you are looking at in Jessops (D60). For what its worth I am very pleased with it, but still got a lot of functions to learn & use, all part of the fun I suppose. Hope this helps a little. Stevie

Photo mags usually carry an ad from Jessops saying they will match the price of any in-stock camera in the magazine - makes it cheap and convenient.

hi, you might find price haggling on the high street is a bit intimedating and i must say it is when u have half a dozen people breathing above your shoulders to see what ur buying...:ok:

there are some nice people at www.yastronics.co.uk who i must say do consider offers and sometimes they will put in some accessories free.

This guy answers and he is very helpful and gets back to you when he say he will.

so worth a look
