Hi
I'm hoping to go over to Italy sometime soon to visit family and was wondering if there is any problem taking digital cameras through the airport x-ray machines? I know this used to be a problem with film cameras. Is it the same for digital? Will memory cards be ok?
Thanks to all you travellers in advance. :)

I was going to ask the same thing.
I'm hoping to fly over to France some time this Summer and I'd be taking my camera with me so I'd like to know too.

I read an article on this the other day....and they are saying that its all good..if you take them through as hand luggage as the xray stuff used there is not as strong as the ones out back that your luggage goes through.

Nope there is no problem... did a wedding on digi in Cyprus and no probs with the files.... to reasure myself I took some back garden shots and then went along to John Lennon Airport and asked the staff to pass them through a few times ... there was no problem BUT DO TAKE THEM AS HAND LUGGAGE...... the video man didnt and the gear didnt arrive in Cyprus :hissyfit:

That's a relief. :)
I'd be gutted if they killed my new camera.

i went to kenya at christmas and was really scared about this!
i dont know why though as i had no problems with the memory cards that i took with me!
the only problems i had was that everytime i went through a scanner it went off and i had to be searched, take shoes off, shirt up ect, and then going through passport control thougt i was somebody else!!!
memory cards were all ok though!

One thing I have wondered about with digital -
When you fly at ~40,000 ft, you (and your gear) are exposed to much more radiation, cosmic rays etc. than you get at ground level.
Is the radiation likely to damage the sensor, causing more hot pixels?
I strongly suspect that the answer is "yes", but have not been able to find out how much/how quickly the radiation will cause damage.

The only problem i've had when goiung thorough airport scanners is the my Palm Organiser gets fried!!:dizzy:
Somehow it kills the batteries and I loose all my data.
I thought it was just bad luck the first time but it's happened several times since. Each time it's been in my jacket pocket.
Laost time i had my laptop with me, so I was able to recharge the Palm and recover the data., but it was very annoyi ng the first time as i went to Mdrid for a client meeting and lost all the info. Now i carry printouts of stuff I might need with me. I thinkl it's time to go back to pen and paper.
