What lens for Canon EOS 3000V 35mm Camera?

Can someone please recommend a lens that i could use for everyday use such as family pictures etc but that would also perform well when photographing animals at quite close quarters.

Probably a EF 28-105 USM. I had one on my old EOS 50E. It served me well as a good all rounder. :)
