but I'll ask anyway and hope someone can shed some light.
When you're shooting indoors I can understand the need for a fast lens when you can't use flash. This is the bit i don't understand...lets say i have to use the lens wide open at say f2.8. Normally f2.8 would mean shallow dof, is this the case here? Or does the fact that i have the cam set on a higher ISO and say 1/60 mean that there's enough light getting in so that the dof is wider? :nut::wacko:

no, it depends on the distance, for instance if ur shooting a subject at say 40 feet away with a 55mm lens at f2.5 the area in focus would be from 33feet to 49 feet (16 feet of " in focus). 6.4 feet in front of subject will be sharp and 9.5 feet behind subject will be sharp (totalling the 16feet)
For same lens and aperture and subject at a distance of 60 feet, the area in focus is 37 feet. 13feet in front of subject 24 feet behind the subject all in focus.
For a subject only 5 foot away the area in focus in front and behind subject works out at 0.23 feet (very shallow focus), so the distance is very important. Because your shooting in church an assumption is made that ur shooting at a distance as you cant get too close, giving you much larger area of focus and not so much dof.
search online for a dof calculator and just play with the different lens settings and apertures and u can get the calculations yourself
