City Centre Portrait help!

I have been asked to photograph a graduation in Nottingham city centre. I have never done a city centre shoot before, and am very worried! They're after candid shots, however the background is going to end up cluttered with passing cars, buses and people. Can anyone give me any advice, please!

If you have one use a wide aperture, f4 would do the job to eliminate the background to a blur.

That way the queen could walk past and no one would notice!

Only problem you might encounter are group shots where you would need about F8-F11 unless you take the pics from a fair distance away then you could revert to F4.
