Hello people,
Well this is my first post on the forum and unfortunately, it's not on a good note. You see, last night I took out my Nikon Coolpix L3 digital camera and put 2 brand new Duracell batteries into it then switched it on. I was only flicking through some menu options (hadn't even taken a photo yet) and suddenly, I heard a crackle. I thought nothing of it but then came another crackle, this time much louder followed with a flash around the viewfinder area. I have to say, It took me by surprise and it almost gave me a heart attack, lol.
Does anyone have any idea why this might be at all? It would be very much appreciated if any has any advice on this matter.
Thanks again people!

Dig your receipt out and take it back to the shop you bought it. Clearly a problem with it, they should replace / refund without a blink.
Where did you buy it?

Hmm, I only wish I could. You see I don't have the receipt or the packaging for it to hand at the moment. Plus, I bought it a couple of years ago. Would that matter at all. Thanks for your help Robbie by the way, much appreciated.

Beg pardon, I misread - I thought new camera, was new batteries.
I had a Canon 300D go fizz: 15 month old, but I eventually managed to get Canon to repair it under warranty -You can give it a go with Nikon, but you may not be lucky.
BAd luck, it's horrible when your cherished camera does this on you. Sorry I can't offer any help. :(

Thanks Robbie, It is unfortunate but I will try to give it a go with Nikon. Thanks again Rob, you've been very helpful! I'll let you know how I get on :)

Yeah, give it a go...you never know.
It depends on the age and cost of the camera when it all boils down to it.
There is something in Law along the lines of 'Fair Usage', which overrides the warranty/guarantee.
I bought my D200 when it first came out, around £1200 it was, came with a standard 12-month guarantee. Had that gone on the fritz after 18 months I should have been able to get it sorted as a £1200 camera should be expected under fair usage, to still be working after £18 months.
If the above happened to a £50 camera, then probably not.

Hmm, the thing is when I bought L3 I think it was something like £120 so it wasn't really that expensive. I was actually hoping to upgrade my camera to begin with really. However I didn't plan on buying it just yet as I'm not really "financially-equipped" to buy it at the moment. Thank you for your help though lostmysnorkel, it is much appreciated :)

Like I say, it depends on how long you've had the camera.....always worth giving it a try though.
If you don't ask you'll rarely get!
