Hi,

I'm brand new around here. So hello :) Also brand new to photography! - dont even have a camera yet

I'm about to purchase the Canon 450D with the 18-55mm lense.

I have a really simple question, does the above camera allow me to take very very close up photos? Of like an ant or something? I really enjoy taking photos of creatures/insects n stuff.

Thanks! Oh and also please can I have your opinions on the camera I'm likely to get. Thanks in advance.

Great forum!

Nowt wrong with the camera (and that from a Nikonian) but I have no idea how well the lens performs at very close distances.

You could maybe look around for a dedicated macro lens as well for the real close-up stuff.

I have the 400d and the 18-55mm lens and it works alright for macro. If you want to go cheap just get a 1 or 2 diopter macro filter. I use a +2 for most macro shots. As for filling the frame with an ant, thats not going to happen with that lens. I was just looking and with a 2 diopter filter you can fill 1/3 of the frame with a 3.5mm stereo plug, just to give you an idea on size.

Worth saving up & buying a dedicated macro lens, suggest around the 100mm mark. Dont need to spend a fortune but it will give you up to 1:1 reproduction ratio eg... a photo of a wasp & the wasp will appear around lifesize in your viewfinder, you will begin to make out the individual lenses in its compound eyes-------------that close!
