Ok here are the rules.

I am going to challenge a member to take an image of my choice. The idea is to push people out of their comfort zone. Something a bit different. Not too specific just something they don't usually post here.

The image must be posted here for all to see.

The image must be taken in the two day period not before.

The member challenged has 2 days to complete the challenge or they suffer the forfeit.

The forfeit being a thorough berating from the other members. OOO and they have to clean up the chat room after the awards night !!! !!!!

Completion of the task will allow you to choose the next victim - I mean member.

OK Im first to go coz I thought it up !! Nice easy one to start.

My member to challenge is - BRIAN SMITH !!!!

My challenge is - You must take an image that isn't a portrait

Alllllrighty... standing at Canal Street for the best part of the morning proofed fruitless for my search for a volunteer for the boudoir shot. So I had to resort to the second theme of autumn with ice.

Was I wrong to think Autumn would have been an easy theme. The only thing that's remotely Autumn like in my garden were some apples and some pampas grass heads. So I tried both.

Another thing that was surprising difficult to photograph well was a block of ice!

Hmm... let me think - who shall I challenge and what with?... hmmm

Actually, I did Mick, but it is something I have neglected to consider for a while during my normal daily life. So thank you for reminding me, my life has been enriched by it.

Also, did you know that an experiment using two atomic clocks proved that time actually does pass more slowly whilst you are in motion?

The clocks were synchronised at Heathrpow Airport, one was placed on an aircraft bound for the US and one left at Heathrow.
Upon arrival, the US clock was behind the Heathrow clock.

I'm glad to have been of assistance M8...but in your example what actually caused time to 'slow down' was the fact that the atomic clock on the plane...being at altitude, was further from the nearset centre of gravity (the Earth) than the atomic clock at Heathrow airport (on the ground)...and that's why it 'slowed down'...rather than it being due to 'motion'....hope this helps clarify things...:)

Anyway......Where's Corrie's Shot:)

Is that right?
I didn't know that, the experiment was to test the theory that time slows down at velocity, not altitude.

I didn't know that, the experiment was to test the theory that time slows down at velocity, not altitude

Hi M8...I'm pretty sure it was altitude....and they tried flights heading both east and west to test it....:)...see below...

"Gravitational Time Shifts
For small changes in gravitational field associated with changes in altitude above the earth, the approximate time dilation expression is
(equation wouldn't paste!)
if a comparison is made between a clock on the Earth's surface (TE) and one at height h above the surface (T). Hafele and Keating predicted a time difference of 144 ns on an eastward flight around the world for which the flight time was 41.2 hours. This corresponds to an average height of 8900 m, a reasonable flight altitude for a commercial airline. The time shift is positive (aging faster) for both eastward and westward flights. The predicted value of 179 ns for the westward flight of 48.6 hours duration corresponds to an average altitude of about 9400 meters."

Hope Corrie's Ok...anyone heard from her?

.Ray
26th October 2008, 04:37 PM
From my A level physics (which I didn't do too well :coffee:) time is relative to velocity (or could have been just speed), I don't remember gravity coming into the equation, but then again I told you I didn't do too well...

Haven't heard from Corrie...me thinks she's locked herself in the Moderator's Lounge and not coming out!

So anyway Mick, the experiment I was talking about actually went the other way. I think it was a part of Einstein's theory they were trying to prove. That if you set off in a spacecraft in a straight line at a constant velocity, as the universe is curved then you would end up back in the same place eventually, however, the departure point will have aged considerably more than you ahve.

The clock that flew the Atlantic was behind the one in London.

I am trying to find some info on the experiment now, I think they were gonna try and recreate the experiment with a supersonic flight to see if there was a bigger difference.

Anyway, who's going to ring Corrie????

To give you a clue, I was in an art gallery once and overheard two eminant art critics discussing a 'Modern Art' portrait.

"That can't be a Picasso, the eye is on the wrong leg"

yes, throw some paint at a white backdrop, paint an eye on a thick area of drip, or find a skeleton and give him a guitar to play and capture it, and you will become so famous.
