If you can run to Canon prices I'd go for that if not have a look at the Sigma range to flashguns. I would say that the 380EX is tried and tested and it is what a lot of Canon users go for.

Can I piggy back this one with similar question..
What would be a good one for a 450D, that could also be used as a commander to fire others?

I use Mtz af 48 and sgma Ef 530 dg st...the former a better gun as it has an LCD the latter a no nonsense 150 quid answer to a expensive 300 quid Canon question... they work fine on my 350D and 40D... just avoid sunpak...theyre pants!!! si

Hi Stink
If you've not already bought Canon have a look at Sigma EF-530 DG Super. Supposed to be very similar to the 580 EX II and it's an ETTL II also about £100 cheaper.

ive got the 380ex 420ex (i think it is) and got the 580exII last one is the best by far, i found the 420 a little lacking in churches and stuff, plus the swivel head was a pain in the ass whereas the 580 is fantastic. The 380 just sits in the cupboard now as a back up to the back up.
My only grumble with the 580 is there is no dial to fasten to the hotshoe, its a push lock thing and i dont like it at all, but thats a minor thing.
