In the 'Pets and wildlife' section I posted an image ('it's only a robin' thread) and the forum would only let me post a diddy little version of the pic - but the excellent 'hedgehog' thread pictures are mahoosive! *sulks*

I saved pic in Jpeg, at 72 dpi, flattened layers, but I had to keep reducing the size until the forum would have it. Should I be saving in a different format?

The two things you need to watch are the compression ratio (determines filesize) and the longest edge in pixels.

You can reduce the pixel size to 800 and still be over the filesize if the picture quality is high, and especially if you have a good range of colours in your image.

If you save as jpeg in photoshop you get a quality slider and a preview of the filesize.
In paint shop pro you do save as jpeg, then click the options button to set the quality (and therefore filesize).

Hope that helps you!

When you have finished editing your pic in ps, go to image>image size then make the longest edge 800pixels, select the drop down box and select best for reduction then click ok. Go to file>save for web and devices. Make sure you have jpeg selected and then drop down the quality box and use the slider to change the file size. You can see this in the bottom left of the window. The file size needs to be 195kb or less. when done, click ok and select an output location. Hope this helps.
