A question rather than a suggestion......
Why is it when I go to upload a picture, even if Photoshop tells me its it about 183k, this site tells me I have exceeded the file size of 195k? Do I need to calibrate something?? :dizzy:

It might be saying that in PS but when you save the file PS will add previews etc and if you use a mac it adds even more info in the file. TRay saving without any thumbnails.

If you change the DPI to 72 and the longest side of your image to 700pixels. Then save it as a 6 or 7 quality jpeg. The file size should be around 100k.
100k is ample for pictures posted on the forum.

Yes sounds good to me Kirsty - I only have a finite amount of web space.
I keep moving the slider down until I see a degradation of the image then stop.
Some images can be as low as 50k.

What program are you basing that on, and what 'extra info' does it add to the jpg? I ask because if I save a file in Serif Photoplus 10 at full 100% the file size still ends up around 28% smaller (on average) than saving the very same file at 100% in Photoshop Elements 4. I haven't checked it on a reduced quality save, but can't help wondering what PSE4 adds to the file. Any ideas?

Try 'save for the web' this strips out unneeded info. When the SFTW screen opens select '4up' this shows you 4 different qualities. In the RH panels you can adjust size, quality etc

In all honesty no-one uses dialup these days, How about listing thumbnails (detailing filesize) or links to pics of real size,
Its vitually impossible to judge the quality of an image with a 160K limit!!

Wouldn't this assume that everyone has a website to store their photo's so they can be linked to? If so, this would prevent some from submitting their photo's - not a good thing. Also, if people were to upload full size images, it would use up allocated bandwidths, again not a good thing.

I can fill my monitor with an image less than 160k - no problem.
I usually find around 100k is enough for and image with a longest length of 800 pixels.

Duno where in the world you are but in all honestry not every one is on broad band. Given a correctly profiled monitor you should have no problem with an 800 pixel image about 100/160kb.
