My partner and I have started a gallery for shots taken by me at his clients disco's (he's a mobile DJ). We're charging a nominal fee for download of individual shots (we haven't sold any yet - it's very new), but would like to offer a photobook of all the images taken at the event, which would be nice for occasions like birthdays, wedding receptions, anniversaries etc.

I've looked quickly into this and have decided that I'd like to use a company that gives downloadable software to make the books. So far the best and easiest to use that I've found is Pixum, with their easybook software.

Basically you open the folder where the images are, click the type of book, size, cover etc and select the number of pages you'd prefer - the lowest is usually 26 pages but extra can be added for a fee. The software then automatically works out how many pictures should appear on each page to achieve the number of pages you specified. It automatically fills the pages with the images. It does a pretty good job but you can tweak it. I did a test run with some photos from a birthday event that we did and the result looked like it'd be really nice when printed. However I have not yet had a hardcover book printed by them. I printed abooklet of some of my images and it was quite good quality, though it took a long while to come, given it was Christmas I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

The only downside is that the books come with the big PIXUM EASYBOOK logo on the back page (or inside back cover). Not a big deal as we would probably specify where they came from but it is a little bit in your face!!

Anyone have experience with this company, or suggestions for other brands?

I also looked at myphotobook.co.uk but didn't find their software as good as pixums. I used to use photobox and have done a couple of photobooks from them for my own use which were nice, but they don't offer downloadable software so you have to do everything online.

and I write:

I have used fotobook on many occasions where pricing has been an issue for my clients and have found them to be excellent in quality and pricing with a customer service department second to none.

I once contacted them and asked if it would be possible to turn around a book in four days for someone leaving the country, they did it in two!

The downloadable software is free and very simple to use with an indicator of quality for the images you wish to add to the album.

Give them a try and I'm sure you won't be dissapointed, I certainly wasn't.

P.S.
No I'm not on their payroll :acute:

Looks good, thanks!! I'll give that a try.

Not sure I want to actually design pages, but I presume that like Pixum you can just drop the photos in and let the software arrange them, with some control yourself.

Pixum now offers even bigger formats and will launch the new photo books on real matt photo paper mid March!

Just so as I'm clear on this (at the risk of asking a dense question), these photobooks are essentially custom made and printed bound books where the printed pages are the photographic arrangements you've authored up (by whatever means), presented just like a normal published book from Waterstones, of shiny shots and text?

I didn't realise getting this done if so was so easy and relatively cheap!

Or if you have the time and inclination you could always print and bind your own like I do. I get my covers from a company called Unibind who do a few different types from a5 to a3, I have a continuous ink system on my printer so its quite cheap to print out they also have some software that you can use to design the pages with.

Has anyone used Photobox?

I had my wedding preview book from them last year and it looked really good.

The Pixum site looks quite impressive but trying to download their software is quite a pain
with d'load speeds about 28-31k it's painfully s l o w.

Perhaps the upload speed will be even worse, any comment pixum_uk?

i used myphotobook website and found them to be good - and no annoying logos to get rid of and loads of different page layouts too!

Well I finally managed to download the software from the Pixum site and proceeded to play with the different bit's and bob's but in my humble opinion fotobook beats it hands down.

It's quite adequate if all you want are a few snaps putting into a book but anything more advanced it is miles behind the competition.
