depends on what you want from it - basic use, or the more advanced.
This one isn't bad:

for basic tutorials search youtube, there is a lot of info there

The strobist dvd box set is the best out there and very nearly worth the £100 asking price. Try ebay for it.

are meant to be great but they are like gold-dust.

I am reliably informed that a reprint hits the shops in June.

having to send my 580ex2 to be looked at i think, those new hotshoe clamps are crud/terrible/shocking/hated. Seems loose at times and i have to keep moving it to get it to read ettl, very loose. Going to have a play around tonight with a screwdriver and see if something is slack inside as per a website help i found with regards to the problem. Or its back to the 430ex till i get it sorted.

thanks for that mate, it was fantastic and just the way im heading at the moment, great to see results and simplicity.

ps got my issue sorted, not recommended though but i sussed it was a loose hotshoe on camera so ripped it apart and sure enough the screws were slack, hopefully sorted now.

Barry, I have a flash problem at the moment with the 580EX mkI that is related to the contacts, can you clarity was it the flashgun hotshoe foot or the camera hotshoe plate that was faulty?

Hi mate, i checked up on the net and found the camera plate is the more of the dodgy, so i put the flash onto plate and rocked it forward and back and noticed the plate on cam was moving, i tried the flash on the 40d and it was solid. I got a spectacle screwdriver and popped the black cover of the cam hoteshoe, just dug it in next to the largest contact and it pinged up and then slid out, it revealed 4 small screws, i checked them and they were very slack (bear in mind its a second hand 5d), gave them a wee beef up, popped the coverplate back on and flash is perfect on it.

The issue was if i was in pmode and cam sits at 60th of a second, when i went to portrait mode and turned cam so flash was on the side, the shutterspeed was dropping to 15th and stuff which i thought weird, wasnt till i supported the flash with my hand did it solve it. A common problem seemingly, some people have to tighten these quite regularly, the tiip on the net was a tiny bit of locktite but im unsure of that in case the screws are conductive for the plate.

Were you having problems with the flash ie occasionally not firing or blowing out the shot Barry?

BarryM

yes some shots were over exposing and some not firing and sometimes ettl switching off. Stick it flash on the cam. Then gentle move it back and forward if it can due to play. If it does just watch the camera hotshoe plate when doing this and see if it lifts and drops very slightly from the cam. If it does it's the cam end and if not it must be the flash mate

That's ok Barry

I saw it posted on another site and I had already seen this thread so thought it may be of use to someone. I watched it all of it last night and yes you are right it's great what can be done with a few flash guns. Looking forward to seeing your results with this type of set up.
