From todays news: Microsoft today released a new version of their Windows XP-based RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer.
Many professional photographers shoot RAW files to get all the "raw" information from the camera's sensor so they can directly maniuplate it on a personal computer, rather than trusting the camera's onboard processor to interpret the mix of gray signals on its own. Because most operating systems can't read RAW data, however, photographers have been forced to use special programs to even begin viewing the images.
Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer attempts to answer that need. Microsoft has worked with the various camera vendors to interpret the RAW data for easy viewing in Windows XP.
This free thumbnailer software has been updated to 1.0 (Build 50), which includes support for the Canon EOS 5D, EOS 1D Mark IIn, Nikon D2Hs, D50, D70s, and the upcoming Nikon D200. A new "Save as..." button allows interpreted files to be saved as JPEG or TIFF files. Performance has been improved for Nikon cameras, and a few bugs and interface foibles have been fixed.
