Now, I wonder who I've managed to hook into this thread through the title alone... Bindii?? That's ma girl...

Anyway. This is a clean post, so we'll have none of that.

This could belong in the critique forum, but I thought I'd stick it here instead, and if anyone wants to bump it, they can.

When a pic is posted into the Critique forum, it's lovely that people touch it up and make it look better (I'm thinking my shot from Ballachulish for a start). But, not always do they say what they've done to it. For people like me who are still learning how to make an alright shot look better through Burn Dodge etc, it would be really useful if when I'm touched up (heh heh), someone tells me how they've done it.

It doesn't take long to say 'Darkened the edges with XXX' 'Brightened the subject using XXX' etc, and it would help all use newbies to stop bugging you groovy people with our almost good photo's. (Sorry to all newbies who I've just included in that statement. If you have any concerns about being included, please send an email to idontlikebeingreferredtoasanewbiewhotakesalmostgoo dshots@hotmail.com

Well, I'm not Bindii, but I just had to look!

Good points too - I'd appreciate the tips!

I agree with you there,,,,,,,,, trouble is I for one always assume that others know more than I and therefore am loath to say what should be done..... and anyway the finished result is SO subjective.......... in the past i have always "spilt the beans" when contacted by private message/email

or you could always state along with your post "please give full details of edit" or similar

Main thing is tho, dont every feel put off about asking for advice/guidance/hits and tips............ we ALL need that as nobody would ever claim to have it all sussed!

Keep posting and help WILL be given

Not EVERYTHING please Martin - keep it to photography please!

Great comment though and one that maybe ought to be inserted into the 'instructions/rules' section of the critique threads?

Lmao.....I couldn't help myself...I have no restraint....Do you know how hard it is for me to be 'good'????....as soon as I saw the title I was here in a flash....yep...you so got me...;)c

On a more serious note....oh yes I can be serious sometimes...I'm stoked that you posted this message...I was only wondering last night...Mmmmm....dammit not that kind of wondering....alright maybe that kind of wondering...

....ooops...back on track again...sorry...:pcs

as I was saying I was only wondering last night how people felt about having their posts touched up...I for one love it...but thats another story...for another kind of forum.....

Anyway I'm glad to see that you don't mind...and here's to hoping that other members like it as well...I personally love a good touching up...it inspires me....to great heights even....dammit there I go again....

But yeah....you have a good point....we should be giving a quick run down on what we have done with the shot....

And David...so what if someone else chooses to edit in a different way....as long as the result is good then it shouldn't matter how long it takes to get there....after all sometimes the long way....is the best way...oh yeah...

I do tend to tell people what I do, but sadly
I use Paint Shop Pro which seems not to
be the "people's choice"... :)

But most people convert it to PS..

Ok then David, you asked for it... You changed my 'ok' image of Ballachulish to something that I've shown my mum!! I can figure out the crop - though it took your eye for it, so mechanics aside, that's something I have to develop myself...

But was it all just burn/dodge, or were there other techniques in there?

Thankss again.

Hi John

thanks for kind words.............. i went back to your original submission and :-

cropped to emphasis the loch and concentrate interest on the building
- used the marquee tool to select a rectangle around the building ( prob about 20pxls as its only a small file size) i then increased the saturation and made it a touch lighter in levels............... i then inverted the selection, Cntrl shift L, and darkened the remaining area in levels.

its a while since i did that so i may have forgotten some of what i did, but i always try to use as few tools as possible and keep the manipulation simple, then you can do it again.

the whole thing was done with only levels , contrast, and saturation, but selecting the areas to manipulate is the key.......... with your shot it was easy you made a fine initial selection when you took it.

hope this hepls

I've beenthinking along these lines which is why I posted a screen shot of Waifs castle showing the layers used. Do people think this is a help?
