Thanks Tony. I've just ordered a 2Gb SanDisc Ultra II off Ebay for £20 (£8 p&p). The player had 100% positive feedback. I'll let you know if I get it! Most retailers (online) are selling these for circa £65. Cheers Chris

If that's a new card you've a bargain and it should be OK. I've never had a problem with gear bought off e-bay.

If anyone is wondering about these generic cards from 7day I've 4 1gig and they download to the computer via a Belkin reader faster than my Kingston 80x cards, the cameras buffer is also quicker using them. All the Bromyard shots were saved on these cards.
Interesting when first connected to the computer they come up as Toshiba not the D200 even tho they've been formated in the camera, subsiquent use they come up as the D200.

Just seems too good to be true to me.....you might want to have a little look at what I found whilst I was surfing for cards on ebay http://martybugs.net/articles/fakesandisk.cgi

I went to 7dayshop in the end.

I've had one perfectly good Sandisk Ultra II 2GB for £35 all in, from eBay - checked it out when it arrived & it had a serial number, was the correct capacity and have registered it on the Sandisk site - so all in all quite happy - in fact I've just got another for £29 all in - so fingers crossed that will be OK as well - if not then it will be up to the ebay dispute procedure (but I hope not)

I was thinking about getting a couple from Ebay - but the expression "looking a gift horse in the mouth" comes to mind.

I'd never forgive myself if I had a card "bug-out" on me during a wedding and there was any doubt that it was a genuine card.

At least if I had bought from a known source and it failed - at least I'd know I had done my best in getting the best gear.

each to their own though and GOOD LUCK with your new purchases!!!

Cheers

I wasn't saying all ebay gear was dodgy (well it might have sounded like that?) because I do buy stuff myself but I was just trying to give a heads up on some of it....I think the best thing is if you can follow a link like Stemmy has put up on proven suppliers then you cant go wrong :)

Have you read the article in the current Professional image maker regarding memory problems? They say that larger cards are more likely to corrupt than smaller ones and that they are slower.

...sorry, I posted under another thread - in photography, I was tired and couldn't find this thread! Barton flyer - I quoted the same link as you totally independantly - thanks anyway. In sum, I've got a fake card, but had to go a long way to prove it! I guess a lot of people would believe they had the genuine article - I would have done had I not gone the extra mile. Chris

As mentioned I bought an Ultra II 2Gb CF on ebay from Australia. The price was good £23 + £7p&p. It arrived today (about 1 week). Looks absolutely fanastic - the genuine article - not surpsrised really beacuse the guy had nearly 700 positive feedbacks and only one negative in 12 months. But I really didn't like the thought of trusting my photos to an imposter - my livelihod doesn't depend on it (like it does with most of you good people). Decided to do some digging. Link below is the best I found because it also gives links to other related sites. Completed my analysis by phoning SanDisk international and quoting the serial number and the device identification (obained through Windows XP). GUESS WHAT? It's a fake! In fact 95% of all memory cards sold on ebay are fake (ebay's own stats!). Capacity is 2Gb, and if I'd run a test it would probably show near genuine speeds (but not quite). SanDisk come with a lifetime guarantee (hopefully that's a long time for me); this one has no guarantee for sure. Hope you all learn from this - if I had not done a detailed investigation (I know I need to get a life!) I would have been convinced by its authenticity. May be it's a good deal anyway??? I, however, don't feel comfortable. I have now contacted the seller (Australian, but posted from Hong Kong?) and will let you know how I get on.

Cheers

Chris

I buy and sell quite a lot on e-bay but I'd never buy from a HK based company. A friend bought a supposed genuine Sigma lens, looks right but the EX badge is quite different from mine (both UK inports verified by Sigma). Sigma have told my mate his lens was made in China using plastic elements!

Well my new card arrived & guess what? - I'm pretty sure it's a fake - no serial number on it, though the packaging looks fine etc etc - I've contacted the seller "edwinszr" on ebay & politely asked for a full refund - I'll let you all know how it goes.

This is why I was trying to give a heads up on some of the ebay stuff....obviously to late....like I said earlier if you can get a reccomendation from someone you know who has received good quality genuine stuff all the better.

Never, EVER, buy from Hong Kong! Also, the Xtreme cards from Sandisk come with a data recovery CD, if it's not there, it's probably fake. I bought a Xtreme 2GB on Ebay but I bought it for £66 and not £23. If it's THAT cheap, it's usually too good to be true. At £66, I still saved about £20 and it's definitely genuine.

I got a SanDsk Extreme III 1gb CF ard from Amazon. At the time, it came from one of those marketplace sellers (I think it was thecomponentshop) but Amazon themselves are stocking them now.

£35ish.

I'd agree don't buy from Hong Kong but lets compare like with like these cards 7dayshop are selling are a generic unbranded card for £24.95. As I've said I've several of the 1 gig and they work fine. They don't claim to be Scandisk or any other brand but I do know my D200 downloads onto them quicker than when using my branded 80x cards and transfer via a Belkin card reader is very quick. Battery life also seems better. Memory is coming down in price very quickly, depends wether you want to pay for a name.
The one gig are now down to somewhere about £12 so maybe try one of those. If you don't like what you've got 7day are usually good at replacements.

To be fair to the seller he has refunded my money - I still remain an eBay fan - I've just got a Tamron 2X teleconvertor, brand new, boxed, from Intro2020 - a photo distributor who are clearly dumping their Minolta stock - list price was £130 - I've sniped it for £37 so you win some you loose some.

Just had 2 of these 2gig cards from 7dayshop drop thru the letterbox.
They are branded Dane-elec and have a 10 year warranty even a web site!
www.dane-elec.com (http://www.dane-elec.com) which I'm just going to look at.

Their data sheet is interesting.

I thought I'd get myself a nice big fat 2 gig CF card, and thought I'd be smart and get if cheap on e-bay. So, bid £33 ona SanDisc Ultra II, won it, and sat back to wait.

Now 2 months later I'm in the claims section with Pay Pal, the vendor has taken his (or her) feedback off public view after receivein 22 negatives in the last month.

Don't do it, listen to Tony, use 7 day shop - I know I will in future.

Sorry you've had that problem, as I've said before e-bay can be great but I'd never buy from a non-UK seller and they have to have 100% pos feedback.
Several of the Wednesday boozer togs are now using the 1 & 2 gig cards from 7-day not a problem in sight.

The weird thing was, when I bid, the profile implied UK - Turned out to be Australia based.
They had 100% feedback over 1000's of transactions.
When I got a reply to my 1st e-mail, it was signed Annie, but when I registered my claim all the contact names were Oriental.

OK, if I get ripped off for £30 ish, it's an expensive lesson. My brohter bought his CAR on E-bay - Now that's something I would never do. £150 has been my upper limit, on a sat nav.

I sold a couple of cars as seen on e-bay, got well over the sensible price for them,:crazy: and I've bought cameras, lenses etc but I've been very careful.
In fact my Leica D2 is going on today with a sensible reserve.

Just had a look at that link, taking their Bigprint 512 meg card at approx £20, that's expensive when you consider 7day are now doing an excelent reasonably fast generic 2gig for £18.

2 of the 2GB cards from 7dayshop arrived for me last week. Haven't found any problems with them so far. I've also noticed previous cards being shown as Toshiba on my PC.

In relation to Ebay there are so many compromised accounts there at the moment it is very hard to tell if the feedback means anything or not. I came across an account with over 4000 feedback at 100% selling a Canon 1DsII for £800 Buy It Now. I noticed the country wasn't right and the usual saying - if it seems too good to be true etc.

The normal MO for getting the hacked Ebay accounts at the moment seems to be emails saying you have a question about an item. The ones I've seen are very professional and identical to the normal Ebay. If it wasn't for Gmail flagging it as phishing scam, I might have been taken in as I was selling at the time. As it wasn't the usual "security alert" it looked more believable.

I love Ebay but it is becoming a minefield.

Amazon are now selling Sandisk Extreme III CF cards themselves rather than just through marketplace sellers.

I've just bought a brand new 1gb one for £23.49 +postage.

Considering Jessops sell them for around £112...that is one unbelievable bargain.

Adam, thanks for the heads up - I've just ordered one. I have a couple of the 7dayshop 2 Gb cards and they seem fine. But fancy having a go with the EIII to see if the transfer speed to PC is enhanced. Cheers Chris
