View Full Version : Studio lighting day, Bradford

Having spoken to a member here and after reading a few posts about the difficulties people experience trying to learn about studio photography, I've decided to offer a day in my studio to a maximum of 8 people (I think 8 is enough and this isn't negotiable because of means of escape (fire safety) regulations.

It will be on a Saturday, starting at say 10 a.m. and will take place in my studio in Bradford, probably finish around 5 p.m.

I'll explain and demonstrate lighting techniques using my Lencarta equipment, which Lencarta are happy about, and everyone can have a go themselves too.

My guess is that portrait/glamour will probably be the most useful subject but I don't have fixed views on that.

I'm not going to charge anything so the only cost will be for a model, if the people attending want a model to attend (otherwise they can save the money and photograph each other) If a model is hired, the cost will be around £100 for a half day (won't need a model present for the full day).

As I'm not charging anything for this the people who attend will NOT be covered by my public liability insurance.

My guess is that this will appeal to quite a few people, so if there is interest in it I think the way forward is to ask an admin/mod to organise it on behalf of the members and to decide which members attend.

Before anyone says I'm being generous etc this is a quiet time of year for me and I don't work Saturdays anyway so it won't cost me anything. I'm thinking in terms of 13th or 20th June

Hi Garry

if nothing comes up in the meantime for me and I can get the use of the car again Id like to register an interest.I was very impressed with your studio-as I said to you and have said on the forum and I think that this would be a fab day for anyone who wanted to learn about lighting.

Thank you for doing this for forum members.

I should have made it clear that the cost of the model - £100 or so - will be shared between attendees

That sounds like a very generous deal to me.

If I wasn't pretty much booked up for weekends I would definately be there.

considering the workshop im holding is on the 6th June, maybe try offering it in July or August!
Im feeling quite generous too which is why the £10 per head is covering the 2 models but yours should prove a great continuation follow up w/shop.

An update...

This will be on the 20th June, assuming that there are enough takers.

Fine with me but I think this would have to be for the afternoon only, a full day might be a lot to ask of an 8 year old...

After having such a top day yesterday with Andy b and all the other forum members, and also learning from Jayne and Karl that you were running this opportunity, i figured i should look it up.
Unfortunately for me i am away though on the 20th so cant make it, but just to let you know that there is another very interested party for any follow up dates you may have planned. I will keep an eye out for future dates.

Garry i think there's a slight lack because of the recent studio meet...yours will probably go ahead but at a later date. People have have also got back from recent holidays and are still settling down.

Garry_Edwards
9th June 2009, 11:53 AM
Well, whatever the reasons, as we only seem to have 3 people so far it isn't looking good...

I'll give it until Sunday, if another 3-5 people haven't booked by then I'm afraid I'll have to cancel

Kenny

HI Garry

That makes 6, not all of whom have confirmed that they actually will do it – if all 6 want to come then it’s on, with room for 2 more.

Hi Gary

as of this moment in time I am coming with Steve on the 20th.The one fly in the ointment may be if I have to attend an open day at Bolton University which is on the 2oth of June also.I wont know until after tomorrow if I have to attend that day or not.I didnt know about the possibility of attending the uni open day until yesterday so it was unforseen. If I dont go Steve would still be attending.I do however wish to come to build upon what I learned at the studio day at Coventry at Andy's B72 studios

Bummer... I'm having my first studio shoot on 20th at calumet Liverpool.

I booked my studio shoot to photograph a load of different friends (groups/couples/children etc throughout the day) purely on a trial and error basis. They get some nice prints (if they work) I get the experience.

Your studio day would have been perfect for me to get some training from the experts before my shoot. I'll keep an eye out for any future sessions.

Thanks anyway.

As I said at the beginning, it's free. Karl has offered to bring his 8 year old as a model, if that doesn't happen or if people want to hire a model the cost will have to be split among those attending.

If this is going to take place next saturday,(20th) then i may have trouble getting there, i could be working on that day, but if this could be set up on the 7th June that would be perfect plus it might benefit others too who would love to have another studio practice??

Well, it seems that we've now lost one person plus our model, with very little time to find a replacement model.

And there are no other dates available to me in the near future; I have a living to earn.

I'm not trying to make you feel bad. Don't worry about it.
It's just an idea I had that I thought would be popular but obviously I was wrong. Perhaps this is something that should be done during the winter, if I get an available date.

Garry,

Believe me. You are not wrong. It IS a very popular idea and i believe there are lots of people on here would love to come along.
Its just unfortunate that for whatever reasons the 20th is not free for a few members (me included).
Any other date and i think you will be swamped. I certainly want to join in on as many of these generous offers by forum members as possible.
Fully understand that you have a living to earn and that is why i think people on here are so grateful that you are taking time out with this gesture.
20th or not, or any other future dates, you will have my support 100%:ok:
