I was happily using my Epson R200 printer a couple of weeks ago and everything stopped. Looking on the top every light was blinking rapidly. Nothing would correct this problem (turn off and back on etc.)

As a last resort I got the instructions out. Please bear in mind the printer was just out of its guarentee. In the manual it just says "Call an Engineer".

As these printers are only £70 now I was just about to get a new one when I thought I would just try a google search to see if anybody had had the same problem. WOW !!!

The Internet was crammed full of people complaining about this problem. There is, aparently nothing wrong with my printer. When the printer cleans the heads or recharges a new cartridge some ink is discharged onto a little sponge inside the printer. The printer counts how many times this has been done and when this MAGIC number is reached the printer is designed to lock-up and request an engineer who will come and clean the sponge!!

After further reading there are detaile instructions on the internet on how to access this little sponge, you then wash in in the sink and replace it (havent done that yet - its a winter job!!) You can then reset the counter that has locked up your printer.

I dowloaded the little utility from the internet and it now permanently lives in my task bar. You can replace cartridges before they have run out. Clean individual colours rather that all at the same time etc. and reset the counters that lock-up your printer.

Hope this helps.

I heard on a TV program a few weeks ago issues about the printer makers and these ink monitor programs....

They tell you you need to change the ink long before you REALLY need to...
