Hi Everyone,

Not sure if this is the right place (moderator move if necessary). We're considering starting a studio for hire to both pro and amateur photographers. It will simply be that - a studio space, with a few lights (or you can use your own), a few backdrops, a couple of "sets" (maybe a sofa with a table lamp, bed, etc). It will be a round 2500 - 3000sqft in total with different areas.
It's all a bit pie in the sky at the moment (haven't even found a building yet).

My questions to you guys are:-

What would you expect to see in there as a minimum? Equipment wise, set/prop wise, etc.
Would you expect an internet connection or computers to be provided? Or would you bring your own?
If we included the use of lights, etc, what would you expect to pay per hour for hire of the entire studio?

The more feedback the better, from both Pros and amateurs. Like I said this studio will be available to everyone, not just for taking pics, but for teaching courses as well. Could even use it for video stuff I suppose (just thought of that! - ah ha, another revenue stream).

Look forward to hearing some great feedback from you all.

Cheers,
Ross

Is this going to be a business in its own right or a bit of extra income to help an existing studio business?
If it's just extra income for an existing business then of course you'll already have a lot of lighting equipment, light shaping tools, accessories, meters, backgrounds, props, a good computer system and the rest of it.

If it's a business in its own right then please think again, unless you're planning to run 'glamour' shoots - if it survives then it will be against the odds and against the trend of hire studios closing through lack of income.

How much you can charge will depend on many factors, not least of which where you are - I charge £20 per hour all in at my very well equipped Bradford studio for up to 4 hours, £120 all day.
