Afternoon again. Im sure you are all getting sick of my questions by now, but i dont care, you are all quite helpful and i'm keen to learn.
So, is there a book that people consider the definitive book for photography for a beginner. I'd like one that can tell me all the basics of camera use, lighting etc as well as give tips on different types of photography, and therefore give me the best use out of my camera and give me great photos.
I have been told of one book 'understanding exposure', but wanted all of your helpful and wonderful opinions

There are hundreds to choose from !!
I'd recommend John Hedgecoe who is a well known photographic technique author.
Waterstones usually have a good selection in stock. You can always find somewhere to sit down and read before you buy there !!

I would do what i did mate.
Grab a mate (or someone who soon will be) And ask.
If you walk about with your cam ,you will bump into likeminded people. I have found everyone great. wheather that are landscapers or wildlife etc, once they see your cam they will speak.

Don`t forget your local library, all free and ours ,even though we live in a small rural town, carries some really good photographic books.

completely forgot about a library. Hopefullh starting a second uni course soon so will use their huge library. I would still quite like a book of my own though so i can highlight, throw around or burn as i wish :)

I have a book called Photo Idea Index which is focused on beginners with a digital camera. It's simple stuff but I find it very inspiring.

The two books that I refer to are John Hedgecoe's Photography Encyclopedia and a book called Understanding Digital Exposure by Ross Hoddiknott I think??!! Both books are informative and I treat them like the Highway Code - you couldnt read them cover to cover in a conventional book way but are useful to pick up and put down when you are unsure and need an answer.

Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Book trio have the best tips and are the best-selling books for beginners. But if you're looking for an all-inclusive textbook-style book, Photography by Barbara London may be the best choice if you can afford the price. I also find bestphotographybooks.com to be a good resource on the most popular photography books at the moment.
