Subject: Wedding Lighting
Can I ask your advice regarding lighting utilised at weddings?
I am planning to add to my equipment shortly and can't decide whether to just have two Canon Speedlites or also utilise Quantum equipment working on the basis that this is also good enough for studio work and would give me a faster recharge rate - what do you think?
Also Lenses - I currently have a 28 - 70 F2.8 Sigma lens but am thinking of a 70 - 200 IS lens (Canon) which should help me with Camera shake. If you use 35mm equipment what do you think of my choice - I am also considering the 28 - 300mm IS lens from Canon reducing lens changes and the possibility of missing that important shot!

I tend to use the light that's there the best I can...
Try not to use flash at all, unless it's for the dancing at the end..
I got a 28 - 70 F2.8 Sigma as well now which i'll be using..
Used a 18-200 tamaron and a 28-300 tamaron befor that..

I ony ever use a speedlight for fill flash, using natural light and reflectors for most wedding work. My feeling is that the couple want a record of their day, rather than a portrait session.
My studio heads only come out of the boot of the weather turns really nasty and outdoor work is off the cards.

Okay I get the message - I shouldn't need more lighting unless I want to take portraits. No-one has answered my question regarding the lens combination though?

If you have a backup body (highly recommended) then use the 28-78 on your main body and the 70-200 on the backup.
You might want to consider a wider angle zoom for when space gets tight.

I use a combination of a 35-70 and 70-300 as 'bog standard'. It covers most of the posed groups and the 'photojournalistic' stuff while outside.
Going indoors though, I tend to favour the 50mm & 90mm fixed length lenses, purely because of the wider max aperture in lower light. I also carry an 18-35mm if things get really close and for the effects you can create with it (not to mention geting the bride, groom, wedding car AND church all in one shot!)
All the best - I'm jealous of you getting to play with all that new kit!

so I can keep one lens on all day. Mind you it's not a light lens and combined with a 1DS is one heck of a weight to lug around for hours.

I have studio lighting which I use if its a set up event. Otherwise I have four 550EX flashguns which I have used a slaves - got some really good stuff from them.
