as some of you know by now, I am death to computers.
We've just suffered a temporary power cut - couple of minutes. i was logged on in my name.
I went to reboot and all my setting have been wiped no access to printers etc. as well as microsoft outlook which has ceased to exsist.
strangly it let me keep admin setting so i've transfered those to my wifes setup and am working from there.
A) this makes no sense
B) any ideas how to recover data.
C) am i being a dumbass again and missing something

Gadget, the data is still there. My advice is to get it to a good repair centre, they will have the tools to retrieve it. I can't do anything remotely I'm afraid.
An even better option is if you have a friend in forensics...they will find everything for you.

had the same happen to me this week, luckily it only knocked my router out, now i'm getting a gizmo (dont know what it's called) to protect against power surge.

Excellent news Paul. I forgot about restore points (not really used a windows pc for much over the last 6 months).
For back up, I would recommend an external usb2 (or firewire) drive, then an automated program. I use iBackup on my Mac which backups up all my data at 2 o'clock every morning. But there are similar apps for Windows, some of which are freeware too.

Paul Way cool - being a geekette, I was just about to suggest that! I'm glad you had geeks there, too!!
