I don't know if I'm looking at the wrong guys site or something but if the content of
http://www.terryrichardson.com/
are anything to go buy I really don't think he deserves to call himself "one of the most prolific and compelling photographers of his generation" but I am by no means an expert.
Some of the contents of the linked site is NSFW.

A bit off the wall but nothing special, a lot of direct flash and stuff you could do with a compact.

Just stick your flash on the hotshoe and put everything on auto should do it :)

I must be missing something, but to me that looks like a collection of every day snaps (mainly)
Whats with the pole dancer and the massive flash reflection in the mirror? Did he intend to do that?
And his 'wife' posing with a trophy, with her rather (unattractive) Hollywood plastic boobs out?
very odd, and not very inspiring.... well it might inspire someone to try harder I guess, but I dont think it'd inspire anyone to imitate really (not a dig at you Rafaelk)

Lol. Why would anyone want to recreate that look. As said, put your camera in auto with the flash directly on top of it.

I don't think it's any better. Sure he's using proper models but it's still just lit from the front with a ring flash. The light has no shape whatsoever. I don't rate him at all. Sorry.

Looking at his client list Vogue Gucci Calvin Klein GQ Harpers Bazaar Jimmy Choo to name but a few, he must be doing something right.

Don't get me wrong, that direct flash thing is the 'in look' at the minute, but photographically speaking, it's rubbish. Fashion magazines buy into the current trends and bad photography seems to be in these days. Have you flicked through a copy of vogue recently? The models are all at the top of their game but the quality of photography just isn't that good. It's the whole Rankin thing of using harsh light from the front. It can make an image superb when used sparingly but the current crowd use it too much and everything ends up looking the same. Then you look at the fashion stuff by Richard Avedon and you come to realize that he was a master at lighting, it's subtle and beautiful and sculpts the body and scene. Some of La Chapelle's stuff is good too, but not all of it. Of course, they are going to shoot the way that earns them money but it does seem like dumbing down to me.

I agree there Matt, brash and loud sells and personal work aside you have to give them what they want as the client pays the rent.

HA, what a load of tosh, theres absolutely nothing at all of merit in any of his images and as other people have said they look like compact camera piccys but in this world if you continuously shout out that you ARE the best and go around acting like you are the best in something then people will believe you, seen it many times.
