Can anyone give me some advice. I've got Norton Intenet Security installed on my puter however each time I start up the machine I get a window indicatiing that it has failed to start and prompts me to restart my computer....Tried this but it still doesn't work. Attempted to uninstall but won't allow me to do this as it states I need "supervisor" privelages to do this. As it won't start up (and I can't log in) it refuses to allow uninstall?
Any suggestions?
Cheers
Charley

Hi Charley
Have you tried to uninstall it in add and remove programmes or through the actual programme?

Try rebooting the computer into 'safe' mode. Hold down F8 as the computer starts.
If the option is available, select Administrator (if you didn't know this option existed, it probably doesn't have a password). Then try the Add/Remove programs.

Sorry Im no help but would like to add my bit.
i had no end of trouble with Norton Internet Security - couldnt browse the web etc.
Finally got rid of it - waste of time.
Hope you get it sorted Charley.
EDIT ......
just did a quick google and came up with this - this is how to remove without Add/Remove programs.
hope this does the trick.

Cheers Martin, Will give it a go. thanks for that link. Norton IMHO is crap. I'd rather get a puter virus than use it!! Takes ages for my puter to start up. Reckon I'm gonna revert to MAC. Never had half the probs I have with a PC.
Thanks

Yup, I had the same problem after installing one of their updates. Called their helpdesk and they talked me through uninstalling a aprticular part of the app which left me with next to no firewall.
I ended up uninstalling the whole thing and gettiing Mcafee - no problems since then - fingers crossed....touch wood....not opening an umbrella indoors anymore so only using softboxes for diffusion now....never walking under ladders....not oputting shoes on a table....chucking spilt salt over my left shoulder....saluting magpies ....etc....etc...etc

Sorry to hear you're not getting on with Norton. I've used it on PC's for years without any problems.
Must admit though, on the Mac I use Intego instead of Norton, much better and a much nicer interface.
The other, more drastic, option to get rid of Norton would be to reboot from your Windows installation CD, get all your data off to another CD (might have to do this in safe mode rather than from the installation CD), then reinstall Windows. I would then make sure that black cats do not cross your path, and avoid ladders.

I've used norton for many years but the last upgrade has been problematic so I've dumped it and gone for AVG Pro.

It must've been set not to allow access to the net through your browser.
I get messages every time a new programme tries to either connect to the net or connect to my computer through the net and you've got to select whether you'll allow it or block it.
I've used Norton AntiVirus for ages and a few years ago got Internet Security and it's been brilliant...not a single virus since I got it.
I also use Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy.

My problem, according to the 'helpful' guy at Norton was that the 2005 update disabled my 'port 21' - which just so happens to be port that your 'pooter uploads to the net through.
He spent a long time talking me through the process tot correct the problem, at the end of which he explained, of course, that two elements of the suite, I think it was the privacy and another one, wouldn't work now as we had deleted files they needed.
So how could I get them back then?
Turns out I couldn't.
Yeah. Thanks a lot, I pay for a whole suite but can only use half of it? And by using that half of it, leaves me open to stuff that the unusable half would have protected me from.
Mmmmmmmm - think I'll stick to McAfee.

Hmmmm??? Sounds like moo-poo. Port 21 is mainly used for telnet sessions. The web is usually served on port 80, or sometimes 8080.

Sounds like the guy you spoke to at Norton didn't know his arse from his elbow. I can't see how they could sell a product that would prevent the very thing it was trying to protect. But from what I've read ere and on other forums, there have been a number of issues like this with Norton recently.

I ran norton for years, but about 6 months ago started having problems with privacy and web access, tried to de-install and re-install but to no affect - eventually gave up and went onto Mcafee and because of the time it took to sort it out decided I wouldnt try it again.

Maybe it was - I'm not much good at this kind of thing. Whichever port it was, it stopped my 'pooter from uploading anything to the internet.

More than likely! But when it comes to this kind of thing, I'm not sure I do either!

Yep - the privacy and web access was my problem too. The problems all started when I updated to NIS 2005.

Oops...spotted my mistake...port 21 is used for ftp, so if it was being blocked then it would prevent uploading. Sorry about that, not been myself recently.

Norton has been the bane of my life recently, I think the main problem is that it conflicts with other software programmes. I have now ditched it for good and use AVAST instead which incidently is free to home users. AVAST supply antivirus to businesses and their philosophy is that if they let you use it at home for free you will be so impressed that you will buy it for your business or recommend it to someone who will.
The other bane of my life has been Outlook Express which I have now also ditched and use Mozilla Thunderbird instead, what a difference.
Incidently, I have just bought System mechanic (£30 PC World) and I must say that this is a nice bit of kit for keeping your PC runing smoothly and it has lots of special tools for doing specific things like recovering od defragging your memory, optimising your drives and interent connections, spyware and malicious file detecter and loads more.

Alan, I am slowly ditching all of my symantec products in favour of others. If they work - great; if they don't - don't expect to be able to fix it or get customer support. I would not buy shares in symantec, their reputation is in freefall. Chris

They went downhill with the 2003 version. There were a lot of problems with it then and don't know if they recovered. I haven't used Norton since 02 and when I find an 03 or newer version on a friends computer I remove it because they have problems.

If you are on Broadband then ideally you should connect via a router, most of which have a built in firewall. IMO Netgear routers are the ones to have and avoid the likes of Belkin etc... These are far more secure than a software firewall and once set up require no updates or maintenance..
For antivirus you can't go wrong with the free edition of AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/). It's completely non obtrusive and best of all completely free :).
