Went out this afternoon to take some pictures for the "Trees" theme. Weather was great, for a change.

I liked these ones, although I must admit I got a bit distracted by the waterfall.

Hi Arca,

I find your picture of the trees very appealing. Can't really figure out why. That is one of the wonders of photography I suppose. Is it the two isolated trees in such an open and flat landscape? Is it the fact the two trees are like companions struggling to get by, each offering shelter to the other in times of need? Is it the way the two trees have survived in spite of the hand (and chainsaw) of man? Who cares? I like it ! I don't often find images that seem to have so many possible stories being told within the frame.

The waterfall was in full spate. We had heavy rain for three or four days before it changed for the better. Scottish weather !

what happened to the trees arca-dog?! When i saw that image i felt really sorry for them - cant say why, prob bcos they are so small. lovley image looks really good in b&w

Arca-dog
15th January 2006, 04:14 PM
I see the trees every morning when dog walking, they must have been hit by lightning at some time; they do interest me.

There is a bleakness about the picture which appeals to me and positioning the trees into the left third helps to make them look more "lost".

Only works in b&w, did a little more than simply desaturate the file (I actually shot it digitally!), tried for an infra red effect using the colour slides, gaussian blur and adding noise for the grainy feel.

Unusually for me I shot it for fun and haven't tried to sell it anywhere :D

Stemmy

You could save the action into a zip file and upload it as normal.

piticu
16th January 2006, 08:05 AM
Of course, stupid me.
There you go. Unzip, open curve dialog, load it.

Arca-dog
18th January 2006, 11:27 PM
Piticu's first two have more of the ghostly blur about them that I was trying for in my shot.
If the footprints were more definite then the final one would be the "top of the tree" (sorry) for me.

PS... Having read the rules my piccy cannot be included as it was a stock image but I will submit properly next time (promise).

Tim- Love the "golden hour"
Kirsty- I like the knotted trees, if the rubbish is a problem either try shooting upwards from lower down or make a feature of it... environmental pollution and all that.

Love the first shot Stug.. reminds me of something or somewhen.. Choogster, hope you don't mind, had a quick 2 min play with your shot in PS to see if Martin's right... What do you think??

Choogster
24th January 2006, 01:26 PM
hmm. little bit too much noise added there. might look better in monochrome with the contrast brought up.

Yes I like it but its a shame you cant see the tracks any more.

They seemed to ask questions if you know what I mean.

Like your effort though.

I like that Tony.

Thanks Tim, the first one is a favourite of mine.
I was being a bit sneaky with the other hoping someone would point out where I went wrong with the exposure. :)

Arca-dog
25th January 2006, 05:01 PM
Kirsty- I like the use of the diagonal across the frame, almost pulls the eye across, nice texture on the trunk. Shooting upwards works well doesn't it?

I too prefer the original of the tree lined lane, it had vivid colours although the sky was a little washed out for my taste.
The sepia effect is quite good though.

Kirsty
25th January 2006, 07:44 PM
thanks arca, i thought i would try a different angle and its fun too, was very cold outside- i was trying to photogrpah birds but no luck im afraid!

Kirsty
25th January 2006, 09:00 PM
i like the background but the tree looks a tad weird if thts the word 2 use- flash!

Choogster
25th January 2006, 10:18 PM
bad composition - the telegraph poles in the background are a bit of a mistake.

You got no snow Renee!!! I thought you chaps in NYS
got really bad snow...

Arca-dog
26th January 2006, 12:50 PM
Tim... I like the colourful effect that the pop of flash has given, not too worried about composition although the telegarph poles do spoil it a little.

Renee... very peaceful, a nicely rounded image that could be framed and put on the wall... I like :)

DennisB
26th January 2006, 01:06 PM
Ok. Arca's comment was the last straw. Choogster and I went out last night and chopped the telegraph poles down. We will be back tonight to remove the cables :D :D

Stemmy
26th January 2006, 01:14 PM
Yes I agree. The telegraph poles and wire needed to go.

Not too sure about the sun or the amount of flash.

So here my effort. :D

Any chance of demolishing those electricity pylons too?... I can see some cables nearby in the image.
Then I think we'll be there ;)
I'll come and visit you in Strangeways with a cake with a file in it (honest).

Unusual to use flash in landscapes

Tim
26th January 2006, 08:23 PM
Ah sure unusual is what I am Arca!!! Tis all about experimenting.. Here's a shot I posted before using flash in wildlife shots.. Hadn't done it before tho I like the effect.. Couldn't agree with you more Dennis.. If you can't have a laugh sure what's the point! I swear I get no work done any more thanks to this forum...
