Well, even though I have a D3, I now have a D3s (long story) and despite thinking the D3 was top dog for ISO, I now know why people are getting so excited of the D3s!... This isn't the best example and I know I'll get better out of it... but the shot below was taken hand held no flash at 100s, f/4 70mm @ 4000iso !!!
The shot makes the room look fairly light, but it wasn't... I'll post a few better examples once I have a real play with it... cos right now I haven't done much past some initial testing and using it to partly shoot this wedding...
EDIT: second shot is a crop of the first

nice shots, not so much on the first but on the second I think quite a lot of noise is visible especially on her skin and the red balloons is where it stands out

is the second a crop from the first?
You can see the noise, but very fine!
Doubt it would show in print.

what people have to realise on these shots is that the effect of the noise is amplified because of the compression of the image. Ive seen first hand how fantastic the new D3s is and believe me, when you see an ISO 4000 image printed out on 27inch wide inkjet as I have you cannot fail to be amazed.
Great images Stew. You are a lucky guy!

Kenny is right... although there is some noise there, but giving that its 4000iso this is still fantastic... plus I don't think its the best example in the world and I'll post some better ones in due course!

Yeah as kennty says, I'm sure the noise is probably finer than the print dots are, and won't be visible.

That is impressive, looks better than the D200 at 320 ISO!

I was going to say a bit higher than that, but I was thinking more along them same lines.
That is some awesome noise reduction, just wonder when it is going to pass down to the X00 series bodies...

Impressive stuff. :Dm
Looking at the shot as it's a civil job and registras let me use flash within reason ,I would still have used bounce flash at ISO 200 though :whistle3:

Very impressive esp at that ISO, same can be said of the 7D, the noise at high ISO is amazing. Cameras just get better and better.

That's the photographer talking :-) The client would be happy with the ISO4000 shot.

It's an amazing picture, Stu. D3 + D3S!!! That's some backup :-)
Not by way of comparison, this is my favourite D700 high ISO shot - Sand Cat at Bristol Zoo, through glass, hand held at ISO6400.
Update: Just calculated the Exposure Value of the ambient lighting as 1 (Scale is generally 0 to 18).

Thats a cracking shot Chris... the D700 is amazing just like the D3... I'm hoping to get even better out of the D3s more I use it. As with a backup, no... the D3 will go as I want to keep my D700 for the backup... its a smaller body and fits in my camera bag better!!! So my D3 is going... but haven't decided how yet!
@ Bandit... sadly around here using flash in civil ceremonies is not permitted... and if I can take shots without flash like this I will... plus you get the ambient light making it more natural looking where as flash would simply isolate the couple with a darker background... but then you may prefer that :)

Not necessarily if you drag the shutter to bring up the ambient but IMO with performance like that from the cam you're laughing.
.... so sooooo jealous.
What am I saying. I DON'T need to buy your D3.... :whistle3:

This is at ISO 500 f/2 85mm lens 1/60th sec, with flash. I added the darkness after in PP. It's a bit soft as I took it off a gallery so it's lost a lot of quality.
I find shooting with no flash at hi ISO I have to be a lot more carefull with exposure and colour balance can be really hard to get right too. The images can also look very flat.
So IMHO it's nice to have the facility to shoot at ISO4000 but I will always avoid doing it if I can.

Lovely Rich - I'd like an 85mm ultra-fast, but some reason my resources are depleted at the moment.

I wonder why that might be Chris.... is that a large lens in your pocket or are you pleased to see her? :laugh1:

It is a large lens and I am taking her out to play tomorrow for the first time.
Feel like a kid on Christmas Eve :-)

It's only a 85 1.8, about £300 ish.
I'm looking forward to the pics from your new lens though Chris..

@ Rich - nice example... you're lucky to be able to use flash!
@ Chris - enjoy... and is that with the new tripod... don't forget to take a shot of the camera/lens/tripod setup... obviously with another camera... I'd love to see the size of it all up against the body :)

Yes, Stu, I have it all now - the Gitzo 5541 and the Wimberley MkII head which arrived this week. Yes, I''ll take a pic and post (hopefully it won't be the best picture I take that day LOL).
