Is there anyway I can silence the mirror slap/shutter sound?

Depending what camera you are using there is usually a function to loch the mirror up - its sometimes buried in the custom functions section.

First press locks the mirror second press makes exposure.

Yes the 20D has mirror lock up - see the manual - Custom Functions.

also bear in mind once this setting is on, it doesnt go off when u turn off camera. i used it for flower closeups forgot to revert back, and to say panic mode set in the next day on firing up camera is an understatement.

The Nikons drop the mirror back when you turn off the camera.

Canon must credit their users with more sense than Nikon do!
