Hi gang. The old man is in need of techie help again, (Oh! the pains of old age!), I've just been thinking about "Home Hubs" and "BT total Broadband". Is there anyone in the forum who is wise to this?.
When signing up, I suddenly got a window telling me that I may need to buy some attachments, (little boxes that plug into my phone sockets and split my line!!!). Now, some years back when I switched to BT Broadband an engineer came out - as they did in the golden days - and split my line so I could use my PC and my phone at the same time! Would I still need these little widgets to plug in to my sockets?:dizzy:

Alan,
I think all they are telling you is that for every phone on an extension line you will need an ADSL filter/splitter.
Did you get your screen resolution problem sorted?
Cheers

Yes Ian, thanks to the forum it's now sorted. As for the ADSL filter splitter...I still don't understand???? As I said, with my SpeedTouch USB I can use the phone and the PC at the same time. Wish you could phone these companies without all those call menues.

Sorry, but I'm afraid I don't know what Speed Touch is - the reason for the ADSL filter requirement is thart the same copper wires to the house are used to carry both the phoone signal for voice and the data, without the filter you "hear" the data noise on the phone.

The only experience I have of these comes from trying to install AOL braodband a couple of years go, ann then Wanadoo a year ago.
Each tiem the instructions told be I needed a filter on each socket in use, and the kit came with 2 or 3 filters.
AOL didn't work in the end, as the broadband box was too far from the main socket, but the Wandaoo system seems to be fine.
I got the broadband for tele-working (as I'm "doing" at the moment, and our IT department told me they always had trouble with AOL and.....BT.
Sorry, I don't know enough about telephony to help, but I agree....can't these companies just send the right bits & bobs, and then not splurge you wth junk mail/phone calls/spam/pop ups!

Hi Alan.
With broadband as said above you need a small box that dangles out your phone socket to split phone from broadband or the noises are terrible through the line. Im wondering if perhaps you had ISDN before which is slightly different but did give you a seperate phone line and internet.
The filters dont cost much at all, most times they are supplied free with your broadband modem etc.
The small box in question in case u already have one is a box around 2 inch square, it has a very small length of phone cable on it with plug that goes into your phone socket, and on the other side of box is two sockets, one for your phone line and other for ur broadband modem.

Thanks again for all the advice. Guess the thing to do is order it then take it from there. Mind you, it will force me to use my new computer more since I won't be able to use ME for the internet.

Also if you have Sky and it is plugged into a telephone socket, this will require a filter fitting, as this is a major source of noise that could/will interfer with your adsl.

Thanks Paul. I don't have Sky, (actually I hate the telly but the wife wants it). I just find new technology confusing these days.
