In some boards they got a "old posts" area which they
shove them into...

I just assumed they would sit there and could be read by anybody.

What you need is a dated archive

But isnt that what the forum is anyway ?

Have a look at the Leica forum Martin.
http://www.leica-camera.com/discus_e/messages/2/2.html?1138201316
They list archives by date so you can click on say June 2004 and see all the posts for that month rather than having to either search (a bit hit and miss) or scroll (time consuming)

Ummm not sure.

Had a look at the forum tTony.

Only problem is that within the archives are loads of threads that you cant see. You have to open each archive to see whats in it.

I like the idea that you can scroll down and see what takes your fancy.

SEE Lydia now look what you have started !!!! - you could have rang me and asked :D

Any more comments welcomed though.

you could always use auto-prune.

Yes but doesnt that mean they are gone for good.

All the previous posts stand a a really good library of discussions.

There's a forum at:
www.diverforum.co.uk/index

which seems to work really well.

Once in a thread, click the 'View All' tab to read all the replies.

Don't know whether this a particular piece of software or not, but this site and the BSAC site are maintained by a guy called Mike Buselli (sp?)

I honestly don't think there's a problem, another forum I frequent is www.kumb.com (http://www.kumb.com)
if you take a look the general discussion forum you will see they don't remove threads until they are over about 1 year old and that's a busy forum.

I think older threads should definitely be kept at least for a while, especially those with photo attachments.
The solution, in my opinion, is to familiarise users in the use of the search facility. For example Tony's lost thread was easily found by searching on either 'generation' or 'bates' from the main forum page.
As the forum gets busier the search results can be cut down by searching in the relevant section if known.

If all else fails you can use the advanced search and simply find all the posts by a specific user.

I always just hit the "New Posts" button and it shows you all the new posts since you last logged in.
