Would depend on your budget, requirements and any affinity you may have to any manufacturer.
I would say the Canon EOS1D MKIIs - if you've got a spare 5 grand ...
The new EOS5D is available for just over 2 grand - full frame sensor etc.

Craig is right I went the Canon route as I already owned a good selection of Canon lenses already.
I love my 10ds.
Let us know a rough budget and we can help you more.

Kirsty being a canon man i would go for the 350D. Its got the same workings as my 10Ds just in a plastic rather than a cast body.
Included in your grand you will need to get a lens which should come with the camera. I think you can get the camera and a lense now from ebay for about £350.
You will then need a compact flash card. See the earlier thread with sue talking about where I get mine from. I think I have included a link to his shop. If not I will post one later.

I'd just check that - I think the 300D is the 10D equivalent, the 350D is the 20D equivalent ???
I could be wrong ...

God im sick of it you are always right :o
The 300D is badsed on the 10D (sorry)
I bought one for my brother earlier this tyes and it looked really good. It has the majority of the same features as the 10D and has the same sensor. A good choice for a first DSLR.

I agree with previous posts. I bought a Nikon D50 package for $1400 with two lenses, partly because I already have 35mm Nikons and the lenses fit the DSLR, the price could be justified to 'er indoors' and I read very good reviews. Digital Photography Review <http://www.dpreview.com> is an excellent site to compare the models in your price range. Good luck!

Ive heard that the nikon ones are quite user friendly compared to the canon model, which ones do you all find easier to use? and works best for you?
Because..crossing fingers.. i get into cia uni, then i might buy my own cam at the end of the 2nd yr as i will have more of an idea about what i want 2 use.

I'm looking to take a step up from my compact digital camera to something a bit better.
Does anyone have any views on whether the Fuji S9500 camera is good value for money. I can get my mitts on a new one for just under £300. I know they rrp for about £400. It seems a good deal to me but are there other cameras in the sub £500 range that I should also consider?
Cheers

Hello,
I want to buy also a digital SLR, and I'm not sure between the Nikon D50 or the Canon 350D.
I read a lot about those cameras and the must be both very good, but a Nikonman say ofcourse Nikon and the Canonman say the Canon.
Maybe one of you can convince me to make my choice?
Thank you, Tom ;)

I bought a Nikon D70 only because I had loads of Nikon lenses...
Saves a ton of cash using what you've got...
Depends what lenses you've got already...
Do they Fit cannon? get the cannon..

If you've no lenses go to your friendly store and try both. Take a memory card and take some shots, a good store will not object infact they should encourage you to do this. Take the card home and print the images.
It's then up to you, I'd doubt if there will be much in it image wise so it's down to handling. That's why I use a Nikon D70 which will shortly be replaced with a D200. Canons, for me, are like holding a jelly. I've never got on with the EOS style body probably 'cos I've used Nikons for years.
The other consideration is Canon change models much more often than Nikon do so your Nikon will hold it's value better. The D70s replacement of the D70 is the exception but you can download most of the D70s electronic improvements and update the firmware in your D70. So, ok I'm prejudiced, go for the D50 or streach the bubget and get a D70 while they are still around, it's worth the extra.

Do any of my fellow members currently use the Fuji S3 Pro for Weddings,I am in the market for a back up for the D100. At the moment the S3 is being sold in the UK for around £695. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I got a S3 Pro... It's my main camera..
With a good lens system on it it's fast,
and gets good shots...
thought the 12mp is interpolinated (or something like that)
so you're really only getting 6mp, and it squeezes out 12.
Use it most of the time with a D70 as a backup..
Check out the Wedding link below in my siggy.

Hi Kirsty
I use the Fuji s2pro with Nikon lens
Back up = another s2pro
I don't see the point in having different cameras as if you have to use the back-up it will act different & also if you use the same body you will know your way around it
Looking at buying a s3pro this year, as yet I can not see a reason to buy a Nikon above the Fuji body, & when i looked into this a couple of years ago the canon system seemed over priced, but it comes down to how it feels in your hands, as its your hands that have to hold it
Good Luck

Kirsty i had to make up my mind last year, nixon v canon. In the end i went for canon, 8mp no noise issues as yet, so no need for noise removal software, although some said that the camera was small in the hands, that is a lot of betty swallocks, its very comfortable in the hand, it doesnt feel plastic either, feels quite solid, it took me half an hour to run through menus and get a feel for where everything was, battery life is superb on it, im just in the middle of getting a grip for it for more battery power, the software that comes with it is great. So far ive got a few lenses for it, all under 60 quid each apart from my sigma which i bought new.
The only issue i have with the camera is when im looking through the viewfinder for any length of time, my nose rests on the lcd and condensation (maybe bogies) builds up on it. So it needs wiped.
Aside that, i love the wee cam.
