View Full Version : Wireless niggle

I have a wireless network which seems to work fine in most situations.

It's a Belkin MIMO router and my PC talks to it using a MIMO USB adapter.

My wife's PC has a non-MIMO USB adapter - and it only seems to work when MY PC is switched on and connected.

I have MAC authentication enabled and WPA encryption running.

Once I have my PC connected, my wife's will connect no problem - so I know(think) it's not a MAC/WPA issue. If my PC is off - hers just reports that it has found the network but is "Acquiring Network Address" which it never seems to do.

Hmmmmm

Just a strange symptom!

Any thoughts anyone? - She's a little annoyed with it. (and therefore so am I)

Cheers

Mark

Sounds like your computer is acting as the DNS server in your network, i.e. it is handing out the IP addresses. Basically in the networking setup on each computer in the network you need to select "Obtain an IP Address Automatically", then you need to ensure that your router is set to be the DNS server - the Belkin site has a load of stuff on this , I'm afraid I use Linksys at home rather than Belkin but that's where to start looking - Cheers Ian

Mark - last post was garbled - instead of DNS it should have been DHCP - i.e. make sure that your router is configured to act as a DHCP server (ussually just ab option in the config), then probably what is hapening is that you have got your computer set up for Internet Connectoin Sharing and that is why the other one only works when yours is on - if so you need to disable it on your PC then all should be OK. You may need to redefine the Network connection on the oother machine.

Thanks everyone for help.

I tried some more diagnostics yesterday afternoon and worryingly the problem seems quite unpredictable.

DHCP is enabled on the router.

I turned my PC off whilst my wife's was connected and hers continued to work fine. Mine refused to connect this morning (needed to reboot the router).

I'll do some more work trying to diagnose the problem before asking for more help.

Thanks again

Mark
