To encourage youngsters, could we have a section for say under16's, I can't be the only one with 2 budding photographers in the house. Crits would be made taking into account their age, so no damaged ego's or simon cowells

Not sure about that.
A 16 year old could have much more experience than a 40 year old who's just taken up the hobby. Maybe the 16 year old would have a less fragile ego too? (am I bovvered?)
Much better that people restrict themselves to constructive criticism for everyone regardless of age.
I'd like to think I'd be open to ideas from anyone 10-90 years old and would hate to see them "pushed" into their own forum
Cheers

Agree Mark. Many youngsters may have had some formal tuition in photography, my 10 year old g-daughter has as part of a media study course. Equally many old coddgers like me while having many years experience which, I for one am only too willing to share, may also be totally out of touch with current trends.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea, another forum that I use has a section for under 25s which is quite busy. However there is nothing to stop under 25s from posting in the other areas of the forum, simply that the critique in the Youth section is probably a little more sensative.

I think if people are concerned about harsh critiques then maybee they can do what Stage Photography has done and incluse their experience with their signature.
I kind of agree with Mark & Tony. Its not an age thing its an experience thin. You could have somebody aged 25 with 10 years experience or a 50yr old with none.

Those who give short, blut, maybe harsh crits should reflect what such comments say about them. I feel if you are going to be very critical you should be prepared to explain yourself. Equally anyone recieving any crit should remember that it's only one persons opinion.

As a 'youngster' - well nearly an adult but never mind. I find it better to have older people on the forum rather than being stuck in our own section, i personally find it better interacting with adults you have the experience and are more mature and can possibly give 'better' answers. And it makes you more socially aware and better at interacting with older people. I like it eh way it is! :) :D

When I made the suggestion, i didn't have people like you in mind Kirsty, you're work and you're attitude shows you are more than capable of holding your own with this bunch ;) I was thinking more of my daughter and some of her friends who are about to study GCSE photography and are aged 13-14, and yes they could put that that info in their sigs. but would that be noticed.

I think putting it in the sigs is probably the best idea. I agree that age should not be a factor in assesing a good image. But I totally agree that the older you are the broader your shoulders become !!

perhaps I wasn't clear in my earlier post, on the other forum I use fotocommunity.com the Youth sections just another section like Landscapes, Portraits etc the only restriction is that you can only post a photo there if you are under 25. Having said that fotocommunity works in a different way than this forum so perhaps Stemmy is right there's no need for that here.
I have now added a signiture, not that harsh criticism bothers me, I have very broad shoulders (and an even broader waistline :D )

Hi,
I wasn't having a go (honest) - I just felt that experience and age don't necessary go hand in hand.
I'd like to feel we were open/friendly enough in our comments/criticism to not offend anyone - regardless of their age.
Cheers

:D Never thought anyone was having a go and I agree the critiques I've seen on this forum have always been open and friendly, but as my last post proves words need to be chosen carefully on a forum as the tone of a post is sometimes difficult to convey.
