View Full Version : How to clean up the background

I was asked to see what I can do to clean up the background on the attached image. It was very much a snatched shot at a 50th birthday party, but it transpired that it was the first time they had all been together for about 17 years so they all want a copy.
The spots above the one lady's head aren't on the sensor, they are actually on the wall. Real upmarket place this was held at :)
What I would like to try to achieve is a neutral background minus the 'wall furniture' and flaking paintwork.
I have CS2 but am very much a novice in its use. Any assistance greatly received and will be required in basic steps.
Thanks in advance.

There are many ways to tackle it, simple way is to use the clone tool. Click on an area of the wall that is good next to the bad bit while holding "alt" then click on the area with the spots and they will dissapear.

Yes just to add to that I would then use a bit of "Healing Brush" just to blend the cloned areas in.

"Healing Brush" is above the "Clone Tool"

Ten mins in Photoshop.

Cloned frames etc
Healing brush to blend cloned areas
took out chair leg from left
add contrast
levels
bit of clour balance.

Ten minutes for you maybe. It'll take me all day! No bad thing as I want and need to learn how to use the various tools properly.

Thanks for the help guys.

I reworked the image on the basis of the information provided here and it has worked really well. The family are chuffed with the result as well.
Healing brush is a magical tool. :)

The place this was taken wouldn't dare have anything white - it would show up the blood and vomit too much :D

you've missed the point choogster, it was a grab shot and they had not been together for 17years and may not be for another 17.
