It seems Holyrood haven't learnt their lesson on overspending needlessly when they can get quality local work at cheaper rate.

Story here. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_and_west/6199881.stm)

I'm sorry, but I refuse to believe that they couldn't find Scottish 'togs who couldn't provide a good level of work for far cheaper rates. But then again, it's only us, the tax payer who have to pay for it.

I read the article and I thought I saw they were flying to the US for the photos. I wonder what they?ll use for a background. Plain gray? Is that something you don?t have there or something?

That's just plain bloody silly, even worse than Prescot spending £600 to change the sign on his door from 'Office of the Deputy Prime Minister' to 'Deputy Prime Minister's Office' Do politicians have a brain removal operation when elected?

Short answer - no - they never had a brain at any time - why else are they politians? Cause it's the only thing they can make money at really!

Utterly Barking Mad - I always thought Steele had a modicum of sence, clearly not.

Barry, Ross and Charley should go along and show that their work is just as good. £3 K each, it's still cheaper than the fee and the flights!

Just added this to the BBC's comments....

"I am utterly disgusted with the Scottish Parliament, 8000 pounds to take 2 photographs by a photographer who doesn't even live in this country anymore. This is such a insult to all the hard working and talented photographers here in Scotland today WHO PAY THEIR TAXES. Are they saying Scotland has no talented photographers anymore??? I've beeing trying for months to get funding for a Scottish Photography Centre and I am getting no where, why??? Because the money is going out of the country."

Er, have they moved Berkshire to Scotland? :Dm :Dm
Knowing the grant system as you ain't in Scotland, even tho you want to go there, Scots funding won't be interested and English funding will have the same attitude.

Don't alter the fact Scot's are suposed to be canny with their money and the Scot's parliament pulls a trick like this.

Ah, but unless I'm very much mistaken, George is indeed Scottish, which in turn entitles him to apply for grants from the Scottish Arts Council and similar enterprises. They have this kick just now about tempting expats back into the country, so you would think George's venture would be an ideal candidate.

Yes Ross I know George is Scots, as I am, but the applicants address can have an effect. Another disadvantage he has is there are quite a few Scots photo centres getting funding at the moment.

Yep, I think I recal you mentioning it...Father's side right? :)

I agree that it may prove problematic, but it shouldn't! Gone are he good old days where things like these were judged on talent and experiance. Now it's more who you are or more importantly, who you know! Pathetic really, but that's the sd reality of it. :(

Most of where I've tried haven't got my address.

Just phone calls... Perhaps I should put more into writing,
and put my parents address... :)

Shame...

I have to say I think it is fine. Who wouls not accept £8k for 2 portraits? You are also forgetting that they are going into a gallery and will probably increase in value. If we took the portrait it would be worth nothing but his will hold it value as an investment.

£8k is not much for an internationally acclaimed photographer. In high end advertising it would cover a couple of hours!
