View Full Version : Burning CD's

I've been trying to burn a CD so Mrs Doux can have our holiday photo's processed.
I have Nero software and have never really had any issues before.
However, every time I try to burn the disc, it whirs round like a good un, and Nero says "Disc Burned - Aren't I a good boy!!!!" or words to than effect. But, not a dickie bird on the disc.
So, after several attempts, lots of swearing and a couple of beers to calm down, I tried putting the files onto my jumpdrive, and burn them from the work laptop. When I plug in the drive, up pops a little box asking if I'd liketo burn these files onto a disc. "Winner! Hurrah!" thinks I.
When prompted, I insert a blank disc. "The disk you have inserted is blank" says laptop (running RecordNowPlus),. "Yes, It's meant to be" says I. But, the overblown pocket calculator is still not happy.
So, I have loaded the files onto the puter, THEN burnt the disc. Which seemed to be fine. Until I noticed it held 177 files, when it should have held 195. So now I've got to dredge through the lot to find which 22 are missing.
Not really asking for help here (unless someone can explain what I did wrong) more blowing off steam.
Saggerfraggerragger dickdastardly...muttter....grumble (A la Muttley)
Happy New Year All, and see you tomorrow Tony and Jimothy.

Can I assume you?re running windows XP? If so why run Nero? Go to the files you want loaded. If they?re all in one fold then select all. Then copy to CD. Place a blank into your computer and open up your CD drive and copy to CD. They should all be there unless there?s more than 710 MB.

XP is kinda new to me...
Have finally succeeded with by roundabout makeshift way.
I'll try this way tomorrow when brain is working.
Otherwise, it's the punchbag option.
Thanks for the advice and sympathy, all.
(P.S. Bindii, yes, I can do anything. I'm just re-inforcing my Perter Parker type cover :tease: )

Yeah - open 'My Computer' you should see the CD drive there.
Drag and drop the files you want into that folder - XP should do the rest!
Mind you, you have to find a 'Scroll Bar' as interesting as marching ants.
PS: Remeber to put the disc in the drive first! (Yeah, been there done that!)

OK, had another go.
The laptop works fine, using Earl and Snorks advice.
The PC drive seems to be knackered - It fails to recognise blank discs. It will play audio, but will not burn any type of data / audio etc.
The shame of it is, the puter is only about 6 months old. Sigh, time to dig out the receipt.

Unfortunately they're from the same stack of CD's I've been using on both machines for a while :(

Let?s try something before you send it back. Open up My Computer and right-click on the CD Drive. Then select Properties. A window will open with four tabs at the top. Click on Recording and look for a check box that reads, Enable CD recording on this drive, and make sure it has a check mark. See if this is the problem.

Enable recording is checked. Until yesterday there has been no problem, so it's not that it's never recorded a CD before.

The beastie is notrecognising writeable disks, so this is exactly what I'm going to try. Filing this, I reckon there's something up with the drive. Good job it's still under warranty!

When did Spiderman join the Village People? The dance routine certainly looks like the kind of thing they would have done. :yahoo:

Spidey has been shooting for the stars for years!
I contacted Gateway when Mrs Doux found the receipt and talked the problem through with an advisor. Immediate response was that the drive was US, so they are dispatching a replacement for Wednesday, as that is when suits me best. Looks good so far, I'll let you know if it all goes well.

Well, eventually managed to be in on the day the courier wanted to deliver.
Received new drive, installed it an tried to burn a disc. No dice. Same problem, puter didn't recognise the disc.
Rang the support line, who talked me through downloading the latest firmware for the drive.
Still no joy.
Suggestion from Gateway is to re-format the hard drive, and re-install Windows.
And every application I've got on the machine.
And every file.
Which I can;t copy, because......
I cant burn a disc.
Circular problem, eh?
Personally i reckon it's a bit sledgehammer to crack a nut.
I'm thinking of buying an external DVD writer, and using that - plus of course I can copy all my files, and then maybe be in a position to re-format the drive and reinstall windows etc....

I cannot believe my luck with this blooming puter.
Ok, when I took out the old DVD drive which "didn't work" the puter started to crash whenever I logged in, sometimes up to 5 times before it behaved.
I knew I needed to get all my files off before re-installing XP, so I got a Creative Vision W, a 60 gig MP3 player which will show video, store and show photo's and will read a CF card (OK, I also wanted this cos it's a fabulous boy gadget - I'll be flogging my old Creative 30gig MP3 of ebay soon).
Over the weekend I managed to get all my photo's onto the MP3, and all other files onto a USB memory stick.
In the mean time, the e-mail now won't let me on, and it took upto 25 (that's right, 25) start up / crash cycles to get the thing on!
So, today I was in the position to re-format and re-install. Followed all the directions, re-installed XP, and waited for the puter to re-start.
and crash
and restart
and crash.....
While I phoned Gateway to get them to come and take it away to fix it.
They're coming for it on Wednesday, but Mrs D. is off tomorrow and was planning to do some work online - Ah well, change of plans.
Perhaps I'd be better sticking to film, writing letters, and using yellow pages to find things out.
This was posted using my work laptop, so I'd better be getting back to work.

Robbie, I back up my hard drive every day. Acronis costs about £30. A second hard drive costs about £50. I can recover my PC at any time. The money is worth it!

Wise words, mate! Not arf!
Seriously, anyone who is NOT doing what Chris suggests really needs to. Luckily it's just a pain in the bum for me, not my living.
Thanks all for the tea and sympathy - I'll be able to post pictures again when it comes back. I'll just have to get myself in gear and take some!
Take care in the snow, all.
