View Full Version : Warning - Weddings Scams
photo3
4th February 2006, 10:46 PM
Hi there
Just joined forum and thought this may be of interest. Not sure if anyone else has received messages like below but just to warn you if you do. The one below was more of a giveaway due to the poor English, misspelt email address! and references to "in the state" along with a fake address. Others have referred to weddings in Belgium etc.
Apparently the scam is to send you more than the money for the booking and then get you to refund difference. By then the original cheque has bounced - I understand that even after 4 days clearance can still be revoked.

I get these almost everyday. The horrible spelling and surreal grammer usually expose the scammers. If it's an obvious scam I just delete. If I have any doubts I just mention that I'm not doing the work until I have USA cash dollars in my hands.
Recently I've been getting photography related inquiries from ex NFL and NBA players starting up businesses. I've never received replies to my replies, so I'm assuming these are probably scams too. Ask some standard professional questions, and I think the con artists write me off as too much trouble. They are looking for straight-up, easy suckers.

the nigerian scams, otherwise as the 419 scam (after the law in nigeria its related to)
interesting site http://www.419eater.com/ in which people have turned the tables on the scammers themselves.

You'll also get similar emails if you advertise on ebay. One thing never ever reply to one of these, you show that your email is active and you'll be unindated with spam, and never open any attachments.

www.419eater.com is a fantastic read if you want to have a really good laugh at the lengths some scammers have been taken in their attempts to get money. Photos of their tattoos for non-existent churches and religious piercings just had me in stitches.

What the hell?? Never got one like that George.. Bloody hilarious.. As for the other one, like the 419, the scammers have been known to entice photographers to a venue and kidnap them, taking all their equipment and emptying what they can from accounts... Very few cases of this thankfully.. It's easy tho, if it seems to good to be true it usually is.. I generally have fun replying to them (using an anonymous web account) asking all sorts of ridiculous questions; what height are you? what time of year is it where you are? Have you ever eaten pigeon? and generally winding them up til they can take no more.. :D

Trying to nick a gentleman who didn't want to be... :)
Funny as hell... We (WPC and I) walk into this shop and at the back are these "people" all in a circle... I stick my head over the top of them and see they are counting wraps of heroin in a guys hand...
I say... "Evening all" and grab the guys hands... The WPC gets her stick out and "asks" the others to leave nicely...
It kicks off.... Drugs go into the air.... I get smacked the guy, and he's off on his feet out the shop.... The WPC grabs the drugs which are in the floor..
I'm out the door after the guy.... and here is where it gets weird...
He runs round a lamp post...
He runs round it again....
I'm that close the the guy....
Again he runs round it...
I grab him and it's a free for all...
A few punches were thrown, purely in self defence of course...
Onto the floor, I get one handcuff on.... His head is at my legs, I'm lying half on his legs so he can't get up...
I feel a nipping on my legs and turn my head to see this guy biting my legs, again and again... Even a slight knee in the face didn't stop him...
He gets a grip with his teeth on my legs and I put my hand out to push his head away.... But, he turns his head and my thumb gets stuck in his mouth...
I'm now in fear of my life as far as I'm concerned... It's when "AIDS" was a big thing, and bites and needles were really scarey...
He's clamped onto my thumb, knuckle on this bottom teeth, and I'm punching then heck out of his face till he lets go...
Took 3 or 4 hits... And they weren't slaps...
Out pops my thumb... One of his bottom teeth embedded in my knuckle...
We're still on the floor, the hurry up wagon turns the corner and the guy in the passenger seat flys out the door as it's moving and lands on the young gentleman.....
Game over for him....
Me... Blood tests for a week... 3 types of antibiotics for 2 weeks..
3 month and 6 months AIDS, and loads of other stuff tests...
He gets 9 months... Out in 4....
*sigh*

Anyone else had a email from a Bobby Isaac?
Original email sounds like he is desperate, I live in Devon! The wedding is in Burton on Trent, he agreed fee but wants me to recieve cheque for £3600 and forward the balance to the wedding planner...His grasp of the english language appears to be limited. It sounds a bit dodgy but you never know.

I guarantee you this is a scam !!!!!
If you get a cheque - bank it.
Do nothing until the cheque is guaranteed cleared by your bank and the funds are in your account. Then send any balance.
I bet the cheque bounces.
The wedding planner is his accomplice - you send her a genuine cheque. She banks it - his cheque bounces - yours doesn't. Thats the scam.
Delete the email !!!

We had/have a scam like that over here...the thiing is the cheques were clearing...and for some strange reason once you had sent the balance to them....the bank would bounce the cheque - after it had initially cleared...I think it is some sort of forged international bank cheques that they use...I'll do a search later when I have more time and see if I can find some more infor for you..

Once the you get the cheque you wil see it's for more than what was agreed and they wil ask you to send them a cheque back with the balance..
Of course they cash your cheque and their one bounces after a few weeks...

Hi I had a email about the Photography scam some one said I am businessman from Iceland and would like to hire me for his forthcoming wedding in Devon. I gave the price and he agreed the quotation. He asked my bank details to put the deposit in to my bank. I asked him to ring me which he didn't. I knew that this man could be fraud as he doesn't seem to be asking valid questions in his emails. The points is to make everyone familiar not to give bank account details to any one.

What i cant understand is what does the sender get out of it?
Usual advice don't even open this sort of e-mail, worms, trojans, virus can all be lurking in there waiting for unwary to open and contaminate their machine.
Some are spam generators wereby your contact list is used to circulate spam, your e-mail address can be used as a return for undelivered spam; I had this happen in my early computing days and I was getting over 1500 emails a night! Your machine can even be used to deliver spam or worse porn without your knowledge.
I think the days of the spotty oik in a back bedroom doing this sort of thing for 'fun' have pretty well gone to be replaced by organised spammers making money. :mad2::hissyfit:
Good firewalls and tight e-mail rules help stop this sort of c**p getting thru.

I got one the other week from a nigerian guy - he was a wedding photographer (not he isnt I thought) asking for the serial/registration key for Proshows Producer.. He could get the software and wanted a key (unfortunatley you need a usb hardware key or it wont work).. otherwise I would off course give him software for free on the back of an unsolicited email ... NOT!
I also enjoyed reading through the church scam who got £80 from a nigerian guy trying to scam them - if you mail 10000 people and a couple reply (which they do) they still make money...

i thought I had had them all, until this morning. Now I have a lady who's husband was killed in a car crash, supposedly, and she suggests she has breast cancer. I read a bit to see if was new, then binned it. I just wonder if this is only going out to us ladies because Breast Cancer is a girl's biggest fear. Perhaps she thinks it will evoke sympathy. Not here tho".

Ah, I've been wondering what these were all about. The first one I had i replied to, quoting about £3k, no response though... shame.
Be careful accepting any payment from overseas, a company I once worked for cashed a cheque from an overseas customer, called the bank to make sure everything was kosher as it was an international transaction, bank said "yes, it's fine, all cleared" sent out the goods and 2 months later the bank came back and said "well, actually it was fake so it's bounced. Sorry. Tough." Or words to that effect.
Anyone who's ever had the Nigerian scam e-mail will find this amusing:

Hi All,
Now they are getting scary - from my e-mals a few minutes ago:
DAVE MCDONALD COMPANY
Independent Consultant,
Modern Agricultural Research Institute of Northern Highland
Brooklyn ,10021 New York
USA
EMAIL ME AT: dave_mcdonald_company@yahoo.co.uk
Hi,
Please permit me to write you irrespective of the fact we have not met before. I got your contact through your listed resume hence I decided to write you. I would be very interested in offering you a part-time paying job in which you could earn a lot...
Before I go further, I?ll like to give you a brief profile about myself. My name is Dave Mcdonald. I?m 45 years of age, man, married with 3 kids (a lovely girl and 2 boys). Due to the nature of my work, I travel a lot. But my Family resides in Brooklyn, New York. I just resigned my job as a research scientist for the company ( Modern Agricultural Research Institute of Northern Highland) but I still work as a freelance consultant for the institute which gives me very much time to do my own work which is basically being a freelance researcher who could be employed by research institutes to do research projects anywhere in the world.
Presently, I have just been granted a funding to head a research project in the tropical regions of UK regarding rare and vulnerable plant species and this would be commencing very soon.
This research program will be funded and sponsored by some of my UK and Some European counterparts. But the only set back is that my counterparts want to make payments for the research informs of cheques drawn from a UK bank, And its a known fact that money in such forms cant be cashed outside the UK.
Getting an accountant in the UK or opening an account would have been my best choice but I have a deadline to meet and taking any of those choices would cost me time and a whole lot of other requirements, which I am not ready to deal with...
This is where your assistant and service is needed.
WHAT I NEED YOU FROM?
At this point, I will be glad if you could work with me as my representative in the UK. You will be working as my payment assistant in charge of collecting and processing the payments from the Associates. Since they will be making the payment by cheque drawn from a UK bank, you will be collecting this payments cheque drawn from a UK bank that you can cash at your bank,
And for this service, I agree to pay you 10% of every amount you collect from the Associates.
JOB DESCRIPTION?
1. Receive payment (cheque drawn from a UK bank) from My Clients/Associates.
2. Cash the Payments at your Bank
3. Deduct 10%, which will be your percentage/pay on Payment processed.
4. You will then forward the balance via Money Gram or Western Union Money Transfer according to my instruction...
HOW MUCH WILL YOU EARN?
10% from each operation! For instance: you receive £6,000 on my behalf. You will cash the payment and keep 10% to yourself before forwarding the remaining! At the beginning your commission will equal 10%, though later it will increase up to 12%! For the research, I am expecting about the sum of £40,000 in total from the clients (though the money will be sent in bits). You could make over £4,000 for the little time we will be working together...
ADVANTAGES?
You don?t have to go out of your present daily activity in order to engage in this Job (i.e. you can do this Work easily without leaving or affecting your present Job). You will work as an independent contractor right from your home /office. Your job is absolutely legal. You do not need any capital to start (non of your personal funds is needed).
REQUIREMENTS?
18 years or older.
Legally capable.
Responsible, Reliable and Trustworthy
Ready to work 3-4 hours per week.
Able to check and respond to emails often.
Easy telephone access.
IS THIS LEGAL?
Yes it is. As a matter of fact, my lawyer checked all legal provisions to know if there is any domestic or international law against businesses or deals in this manner. And he said its allowed by all LAWS. So know that doing this work is safe and legitimate...
Guess all is well understood, I would be glad if you accept my proposal. E-mail me on

Hi Eng.,
Got that one a week or so ago. I gave it a miss.
With London being full of top notch togs, I wondered why they wanted someone from the back and beyond miles from Bristol. Same applies to Staffs., I suppose.

It just seemed a little bit OTT for a first email.

We have received an alert this morning that an 'Albert Gomez' has contacted photographers on www.guidesforbrides.co.uk asking for a quote for a fictitious wedding on December 26th.
The language and wording of the email is very clumsy and should be easily identifiable should he contact any other businesses in other categories or under a different name.
The mobile number he has given is a premium rate number.

It gave an address in Skelmersdale - and when I googled the postcode its a vending machine company... I didn't realise they were registered to conduct weddings!!
Didn't bother to respond to it as it didn't even have my name in the To, box

This one is a bit weird....
I got a call today from "Rhiana" at somewhere I didn't catch. Apparently they called me last year and asked me to sponsor some books for a local school. They were calling to say they were now ready and to ask which school I wanted them donated to.
A bit bemused (because frankly donating books to a school is the kind of thing I might do and I vaguely remember a call) I named my local primary school. Then they asked if it was OK to put my contact details in back of the book ("a gift from...") and if it would be OK for the headteacher to contact me to thank me.
I hadn't had enough caffeine this morning so I was slow. I gave them my name (which is on the website right next to my phone number).
Too late, MUCH too late my inbuilt caution kicked in. "Hang on, are you going to charge me for these?" "We agreed last year that you would make this charitable donation which can be totally offset against tax" "and do you think I'm going to pay you?" "when you receive your copy of the book and the school receives theirs we will invoice you for £199 which is totally tax deductible since it's a charitable donation".
At this point I started saying that I certainly hadn't authorised £199 for charitable books and that......but they hung up.
The interesting point is that I'm a one man band (ltd company but there's only me) and pretty cautious - and they very nearly got me. I'm sure if I'd not pulled them up they would have sent some crappy pamphlet to a school and billed me for £199. And I would have had a hard time disputing the invoice since they had warned me they were going to send it. If I'd been a big company then I'll bet it would have worked.
Actually I wasn't even certain it was a scam until they hung up.

Hi,
Not really sure on this one as I get a lot similar from people who do not have English as a first language.
Just ask for a deposit of £200 to confirm the booking and take it from there.
Further to that there is a guy with that name who works in a travel agents (France) but the name is not common. No trace of scams under that name either - that I can find.

LOL...I'll bet she had a northern accent too?????
Not implying anything about northerners (after all, I am one!) it's just that I get loads of calls like that, all along the same lines, all for 'Children's Charities' an for an amount I apparantly agreed to pay 'last September'.
The two charities my business does support both have a password for me, and unless they open the conversatoin with the password, then I switch into 'fun' mode and see how long I can keep 'em talking!

I don't know about you guys be we ALWAYS meet the B+G before a wedding, at least once, usually twice, we believe getting to know them is important before the wedding. We wouldn't take on a booking from a letter or just a phone call, so these scams just wouldn't work on us, although they are getting cleverer all the time...... ??? Wayne:snap1:

Hi All,
You will really need to start at the bottom of this post and work backwards through the e-mails sent and received - sorry about that. Hopefully worth a read though.
Now scoll to the bottom of the post: thanks! :coffee:
Hi,
If it’s not a scam then send £200 (to cover cost of flights) immediately via Paypal and provide you wife’s land address and telephone number. After I get the money confirmed then you can pay off the balance 10 days before the wedding. I will then book the flight to London. You will need to pay the Hertz rent a car people first to confirm the use of the Daimler for myself to carry the camera gear and lighting.
What is your address and phone number that Hertz can contact for the Visa card?
Thanks,
George

Not sure quite what this guy hopes to gain from this??
He hopes to gain your bank details!
I have put my previous post here too as I am a bit short of replies!!!
PS , Iam not a scammer!
-Previous post-
Hello,
My name is Eddie Impey and I am looking for a student of photography, probably in their second or third years to help me produce a Portfolio for a private residence/ business in France, in the Loire Valley.
This job DOES NOT PAY MONEY!!! However all your flights, accomodation and any out of pocket expenses will be met.
The job would entail photographing various aspects of an 90 hectare hunting estate attached to a 17th century Chateau. The estate is to be marketted in the Autumn and we are putting our prospectus together but we need a talented (or up and coming) student of photography to help us with the photos.
We need photographs of buildings (internal and extermnal), landscapes, wildlife, the lakes, the Chateau and various other bits and pieces. The job could probably be completed in one day but we could allow up to thre days or so.
The work would add an interesting a diverse element to any portfolio and you would of course see your work published, albeit in a small run prospectus.
The actual project is a little difficult to explain her so please feel free to ring me to discuss the details.
You would need to be available in late August, or early September. You will also need to be within a reasonable distance of either Stanstead Airport or Southampton airport.
Whilst no renumeration is being offred, this project would be enormous fun for someone, and I can promise you a very unique and interesting experience.
You should be able to provide some evidence of what you can do, and obviously you wil have your own equipment!
To discuss this further please phone me on 07767 832145.
Finally, please remember, this is a hunting estate so if you have strong anti hunting views, please dont apply! The photography incidentally will not involve any hunting whatsoever.
I hope I haven't upset anyone by postingh this message here. If it is more appropriately posted elsewhere, please feel free to do so.

Not quite the same thing but my husband had a similar email regarding his car that he was advertising for sale. They offered an amount that was way over the top and said they would send a little dude over to check it over then accompany it back during shipping.
Once again, the bad grammar was a big giveaway not to mention the unusual approach.

Hi All,
You will really need to start at the bottom of this post and work backwards through the e-mails sent and received - sorry about that. Hopefully worth a read though.

I take it the £200 is still on its way? ;)
Seriously, though, that makes me so mad! How dare they?!

A friend had this with a bike he was selling for £1500. They sent a cheque for £4000 to cover shipping and asked for the balance of money to be sent to someone in Essex. As we're not far away he suggested he could go personally to save the bother! It didnt go down too well when he said he would turn up there with the bike instead :)

I wonder how many people have actually been caught out with this. It's sickening!

Someone rang me (withheld number) last week asking for my availability on a date next year, then said he wanted to book but didn't ask for the price or coverage or to see samples - strange I thought. Then when I suggested a meeting before they book, he said he would ring back to confirm the best time to meet. Never heard again.

no doubt this is gonna offend a lot of people.
If your stupid enough to get married then your stupid enough to get ripped off.
I.cant believe people still fall for the marriage cobblers.
Tradition is no more and the sooner people think about it the better
What a crap post.So we are stupid just because some of us got married are we .
I can see you will make a lot of friends on this forum.
If this is the best contribution you can make to this forum ,i suggest you go elsewhere.

There's no need to call people stupid just cos they don't hold the same values as you. :stop:
Besides this thread is about scams targetted at photographers, not people getting married. Please at least read the thread before you start trolling.

Hi Mick
I think you need to curb your opinion on marriage mate. I'm not married nor am I a lover of marriage and saw my Bro get married twice and regret it.But...Ive got lots of friends who are married and have a wonderful relationship which is inspiring to see.
Dont write off someone else s choice because it doesn't correspond with your own views. Its still a free world( so they try to tell us) and you are entitiled to your views but please try to temper them with a little common sense.
As has been pointed out, this thread is about something other than marriage and maybe you should have tailored your comments in that direction. Its not a good idea when youve only just joined a forum to piss people off in the first week:punish2:

Have to agree with Kenny and the other chaps, Mickey.
I'm a bitter divorcee and know all too well the pitfalls of marriage, but I would never call people stupid for it in the manner you have done.
I would jokingly say don't do it, but that's another thing.
You may well have your personal reasons for a pretty strong post, but it's definately wiser to bite your tongue in a public forum, just the same way we all have to do the same when we get pulled over in the car and the copper asks us "Is this vehicle yours sir?"
We all are dying to say "no I've just stolen it, how about a blues and two's escort for a quick getaway mate", but we always just say "yes".

I'm a firm believer in marriage as long as it's with the right people. I married my missus after being with her for ten months, eight of which I was away serving in N.I. Yes it was pretty quick but it's now eight years down the line and I couldn't imagine my life without her. I love her more every single day and thank my lucky starts that I met her. As well as it being a formal declaration for how we feel about each other, it also gives her (or me) certain rights in the event of an unfortunate accident and on top of that, whenever I'm away from her and feeling low, all I have to do is look down at my ring finger and it makes me feel better. So in short, people who say marriage is outdated or whatever have either never been married or have been unlucky with their choice of partner. When you do it with the right person there is nothing better in the world so until you have experienced it, how about you keep your ill informed opinions to yourself.

I meant to imply that Matt, but it looks missing in my post.
My nan and grandad have been married for over 60 years (two telegrams at least so far from HRH Liz), so yes agree with right partners anything can happen.
